Longlisted for the Desmond Elliott Prize and named among the 50 most notable new books from Africa, Castles from Cobwebs follows one girl’s transition from youthful innocence to understanding as she navigates questions about family, identity, and race. "I'd always known that I was Brown. Black was different though; it came announced. Black came with expectations, of rhythm and other things that might trip me up." Imani is a foundling. Rescued as a baby and raised by nuns on a remote Northumbrian island, she grows up with an ever-increasing feeling of displacement. Full of questions, Imani turns to her shadow, Amarie, and her friend Harold. When Harold can't find the answers, she puts it down to what the nuns call her "greater purpose". At nineteen, Imani answers a phone call that will change her life: she is being called to Ghana after the sudden death of her biological mother. Past, present, faith and reality are spun together in this enthralling debut. Following her transition from innocence to understanding, Imani's experience illuminates the stories we all tell to make ourselves whole

A fifty year odyssey of a man who dared to venture aptly describes this book which recounts the life, loves, escapades and exploits of Sylvester A. Mensah, the man, scholar, technocrat, politician, and family man, raw and uncut This engrossing narrative, which draws on autobiographical sketches, takes the reader on an exciting journey through the vicissitudes of life lived in familial and other settings, for the most part in Ghana. Like all life stories, it has the element of a roller-coaster of highs and lows; a story of fortitude in the face of difficulty and of triumph of the human spirit over adversity. In a sense it is everymans story, and yet unique, as it resonates with the human expe...

Searching for Sodye

A. M. Mensah has written a semi-autobiographical novel, depicting the care homes in the 1950's and 1960's England. The novel is from the perspective of mixed raced children of African and Irish heritage. The book tells a child's story of loss and abandonment as well as their struggles of self preservation alone without parental support. At the time of flourishing 1960's pop culture, found two young girls being brought up by strict Roman Catholic nuns. In order to escape their traumatic upbringing they travel to Franco's Spain where the USA military were based during the Vietnam War. This is a search of two children ultimately seeking their own self identity and self determination and the dramatic outcomes of their separate lives.

Migration in West Africa

This open access Regional Reader examines the dynamics and impacts of international migration within and from West Africa. The book presents key theoretical perspectives and empirical findings on historical trends, geographical patterns, drivers and socio-economic impacts of both voluntary and involuntary migration in West Africa, a region that is characterised by high level of mixed migration flows. The book is divided into three main parts: changing patterns and governance of migration, managing environmental and forced migration, and diaspora, transnationalism and development. The chapters raise key research questions and outline recommendations for improving migration governance, protecting migrants and harnessing the benefits of migration for socio-economic development for both countries of origin and destination of migrants. As such this Regional Reader provides an interesting read to students, academics, researchers, migration experts, development practitioners and policy makers.

The fact that racism has adverse effects on Blacks and other minorities is obvious. But what is not so obvious are the hidden impacts of racism on all members of society, including white people. Joseph Mensah and Christopher J. Williams argue that ethics of altruism and social justice are inadequate to curb racism because they neglect the impact of racism on whites. Just like a boomerang, acts of hatred and racism against people of colour and even unsolicited and sometimes unconscious exertions of white privilege ultimately come back to harm almost everyone in society. Timely and incredibly important, Boomerang Ethics is a much-needed resource in the fight against racism because it does not gloss over the self-interests of members of the privileged, who ultimately have the power to help alleviate racism.
