Testis, Epididymis and Technologies in the Year 2000

Testis, Epididymis and Technologies in the Year 2000

A number of chapters present the most novel research on testicular and epididymal functions or on more general fields of hormone action and molecular cell biology as it is now a tradition. However, exceptionally, the book also contains several chapters dealing with the "Approaches and Tools in the Third Millenium". The unusual inclusion of technologies as such in the 2000 edition of the workshop was an absolute necessity, as these technologies are revolutionizing the fields of biology and medicine and, in many instances, how to do research. This volume gives the scientific community essential information about the very latest technical developments and their potential for future progress.

African Military Geoscience

ÿThis eight-chapter volume, African Military Geosciences: Military History and the Physical Environment, is a tour-de-force covering nearly 500 years of African military geosciences. It is a truly global book that reveals keen insights into regional, national and international military-forces activities centered in Africa and how the understanding of geosciences plays important roles. It is written for the specialist, but also attractive to the general military buff ? well referenced and illustrated with figures from primary sources, historical catalogues and compendia. The publication further explores the ?age of sail?, harbour defenses, the trafficability of desert environments and marshes, as well as climate?controls on sailing or land battles. There is even insight into an elite artillery unit staffed by women during Second World War ? essentially covering the whole gamut. Ultimtely, the reader explores a nearly 500 year journey around the African continent and beyond.

Microarray Technology in Practice

Microarray Technology in Practice

Using chips composed of thousands of spots, each with the capability of holding DNA molecules corresponding to a given gene, DNA microarray technology has enabled researchers to measure simultaneously gene expression across the genome. As with other large-scale genomics approaches, microarray technologies are broadly applicable across disciplines of life and biomedical sciences, but remain daunting to many researchers. This guide is designed to demystify the technology and inform more biologists about this critically important experimental technique. Cohesive overview of the technology and available platforms, followed by detailed discussion of experimental design and analysis of microarray experiments Up-to-date description of normalization methods and current methods for sample amplification and labeling Deep focus on oligonucleotide design, printing, labeling and hybridization, data acquisition, normalization, and meta-analysis Additional uses of microarray technology such as ChIP (chromatin immunoprecipitation) with hybridization to DNA arrays, microarray-based comparative genomic hybridization (CGH), and cell and tissue arrays

Appreciating Physical Landscapes

Geotourism, as a form of sustainable geoheritage tourism, was defined and developed, from the early 1990s, to contextualize modern approaches to geoconservation and physical landscape management. However, its roots lie in the late seventeenth century and the emergence of the Grand Tour and its domestic equivalents in the eighteenth century. Its participants and numerous later travellers and tourists, including geologists and artists, purposefully explored wild landscapes as‘geotourists’. The written and visual records of their observations underpin the majority of papers within this volume; these papers explore some significant geo-historical themes, organizations, individuals and locations across three centuries, opening with seventeenth century elite travellers and closing with modern landscape tourists. Other papers examine the resources available to those geotourists and explore the geotourism paradigm. The volume will be of particular interest to Earth scientists, historians of science, tourism specialists and general readers with an interest in landscape history.
