Sounds of Survival
Sounds of Survival tells a story of unexpected musical continuity across some of the twentieth century's most cataclysmic events. It examines an integrated Polish-Jewish musical community as its members contended with antisemitism in the 1930s, were persecuted during the Nazi occupation, and attempted to establish a renewed musical culture from the ashes of World War II and the Holocaust. Attending to these musicians from the 1920s into the 1950s, the book is a rigorous examination of Jewishness within twentieth-century Polish classical music, and the first to examine how the Holocaust was a defining event for the country's musical culture. J. Mackenzie Pierce argues that despite the nearly unimaginable violence experienced by these musicians, many of their projects and ideals were reinvited and preserved across war and genocide. Thus, he rejects the common assumption that World War II and the Holocaust were epoch-defining ruptures in Polish, Jewish, and European culture, instead showing that the midcentury was a period of fervent reinvention and cultural development in response to trauma.

Performing Commemoration
Public commemorations of various kinds are an important part of how groups large and small acknowledge and process injustices and tragic events. Performing Commemoration: Musical Reenactment and the Politics of Trauma looks at the roles music can play in public commemorations of traumatic events that range from the Armenian genocide and World War I to contemporary violence in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and the #sayhername protests. Whose version of a traumatic historical event gets told is always a complicated question, and music adds further layers to this complexity, particularly music without words. The three sections of this collection look at different facets of musical commemorations and reenactments, focusing on how music can mediate, but also intensify responses to social injustice; how reenactments and their use of music are shifting (and not always toward greater social effectiveness); and how claims for musical authenticity are politicized in various ways. By engaging with critical theory around memory studies and performance studies, the contributors to this volume explore social justice, in, and through music.
Musical Modernism in Global Perspective
In the first study of the global dimensions of musical modernism, Björn Heile proposes a novel theory according to which musical modernism is constituted by a global diasporic network of composers, musicians and institutions. In a series of historical and analytical case studies from different parts of the world, this book overcomes the respective limitations of both Eurocentric and postcolonial, revisionist accounts, focusing instead on the transnational entanglements between the West and other world regions. Key topics include migration, the transnational reception and transfer of musical works and ideas, institutions such as the International Society for Contemporary Music (ISCM) and composers who are rarely discussed in Western academia, such as the Nigerian-born Akin Euba and the Korean-German Younghi Pagh-Paan.
