Single-Domain Antibodies: Biology, Engineering and Emerging Applications
Single-domain antibodies (sdAbs) represent the minimal antigen binding-competent form of the immunoglobulin domain and have unique properties and applications. SdAbs are naturally produced as the variable domains of the heavy chain-only antibodies of camelid ruminants and cartilaginous fishes, but can also be engineered synthetically from autonomous human or mouse VH or VL domains. Ecological Niches
Why do species live where they live? What determines the abundance and diversity of species in a given area? What role do species play in the functioning of entire ecosystems? All of these questions share a single core concept—the ecological niche. Although the niche concept has fallen into disfavor among ecologists in recent years, Jonathan M. Chase and Mathew A. Leibold argue that the niche is an ideal tool with which to unify disparate research and theoretical approaches in contemporary ecology. Chase and Leibold define the niche as including both what an organism needs from its environment and how that organism's activities shape its environment. Drawing on the theory of consumer-resource interactions, as well as its graphical analysis, they develop a framework for understanding niches that is flexible enough to include a variety of small- and large-scale processes, from resource competition, predation, and stress to community structure, biodiversity, and ecosystem function. Aspects of Cameroon English Phonology
Cameroon English (CamE) phonology has already developed into a quasi-autonomous system. Thousands of segmental and stress deviations from native English reach, or approximate to a frequency of 100%. Analysed from a generative perspective, the deviations are shown to derive from the fact that certain Received Pronunciation (RP) rules do not apply in CamE while others apply differently, partially or more generally, and still many others are typically Cameroonian. One of the major proposals of the book is the concept of Trilateral Process which consists of RP phonological processes symbolized by a side AA', the restructuring of the RP underlying representation (UR) into a CamE UR by AB and CamE phonological rules by BB'. The concept is applicable to other non-native Englishes.
Islands and Chains
The present work provides a detailed analysis of chain formation and locality conditions imposed on it within the Minimalist Program. It does so by analyzing resumptive strategies in great detail. This study claims that resumptive pronouns and their antecedents are first merged as constituents, and are separated via movement (thus forming instances of discontinuous constituents). Resumptive chains are thus akin to the well-known stranding analysis of quantifier float. A taxonomy of islands is developed that crucially ties barriers for movement to agreement possibilities. The stranding of a resumptive pronoun is shown to limit the role of agreement for the moving element, thereby allowing a chain to be formed across an island.
