Advances in Cancer Research
Volume 76 of Advances in Cancer Research continues the series' goal of publishing timely and authoritative reviews in the broad field of cancer research. Ruoslahti begins the volume with a review of fibronectin and its integrin receptors in cancer. Chapter 2 by Ganter and Lipsick discusses Myb and oncogenesis. Biscardi and colleagues present their research on c-Src, receptor tyrosine kinases, and human cancer in Chapter 3. Chapter 4 by Schulz covers epidemiology of Kaposi's sarcoma and associated herpesvirus/human herpesvirus 8. The consensus on synergism between cigarette smoke and other environmental carcinogens in the causation of lung cancer is reviewed by Reif and Heeren in Chapter 5. In Chapter 6, Breivik and Gaudernack discuss perspectives on carcinogenesis and natural selection in the genetics and epigenetics of colorectal cancer. Chapter 7 by Coulie and co-workers concludes the volume with a discussion of anti-tumor immunity at work in a melanoma patient.
Cancer Immunology
This publication provides a comprehensive account of the known groups of human tumour antigens, and the immune effector cells involved in tumour rejection. Chapters dealing with all the major groups of human tumour antigens are included, covering differentiation antigens, testes-associated antigens, CEA, mucin, viral antigens, anti-idiotypic antibodies as antigens, and fusion proteins. The role of heat shock proteins as mediators of tumour immunity is discussed and consideration is given to the immune mechanisms which mediate tumour rejection in both human and animal systems. The application of antibody targeting to identify cancers, and the mechanisms by which tumours evade immune detection and/or destruction is covered in detail. Although the focus of this publication is experimental, as with other recent publications progress in clinical immunotherapy is included in some detail, to provide postgraduate and post-doctoral scientists with in-depth reviews of the field.

Immunology of Ocular Tumors
The eye and the ocular adnexa may give rise to over three hundred histologically different tumors - by far the largest tumor variety of the human body. However, the immunological behavior of these tumors has only been explored in some cases, although it is well established that the eye is an immune-privileged site in which cells that express foreign antigens escape immune-mediated elimination. Human tumors also create an immune-privileged surrounding and thereby escape from anti-tumor immune responses. Highlighting aspects of ocular and general tumor, this text summarizes the role of the immune system and how tumor tissue can influence various parameters (T-cells, NK-cells, HLA-expression, apoptosis), leading to escape mechanisms used by the tumor. New therapeutic regimens urgently required by patients are also reviewed, and the immunological behavior of skin melanoma is compared to choroidal melanoma, whilst basal cell carcinoma of the ocular lid is compared to those of the skin.
