Adriaen de Vries 1556-1626
This elegant exhibition catalog includes sixty-six works of art by this virtuoso sculptor, plus accompanying essays. Born in The Hague, Adriaen de Vries worked with the official sculptor to the Medici dukes beginning in 1580s, and in 1601 he was appointed official court sculptor to Rudolf II in Prague, where he worked until his death. Some of his best-known works are illustrated and described in this comprehensive volume, including the Bust of Emperor Rudolph II, the fountain Mercury and Cupid, Psyche Born Aloft by Putti, Juggling Man and The Wrestlers.
The Dance Around the Golden Calf by Lucas Van Leyden
Lucas van Leyden (1494–1533) was as important for his age as Rembrandt was for the 17th century. He introduced the Renaissance to the Netherlands and was influenced by both Dürer and Raphael. His paintings are lively, colorful, and full of narrative; his prints are refined and playful. The Dutch Revolt and Catholic Exile in Reformation Europe
"The present study seeks to probe the formative impact of exile on changing Catholic identities, both in the northern and in the southern Netherlands. More specifically, it will argue that many displaced Catholics became receptive to militant strands of Catholicism during their years in foreign safe havens. Local media, clerical leadership and forms of sociability facilitated and shaped this process of religious radicalisation among Catholic expatriates. When the changing course of the war allowed the exiles to return home, these spiritually reborn men and women promulgated their radical beliefs in areas recovered by the Habsburg monarchy"--
