The Circumstellar Environment of Evolved Stars as Revealed by Studies of Circumstellar Water Masers

The dissertation presents the results of a multi-epoch very long baseline interferometric study of water masers located in the extended atmospheres of evolved stars. The research was performed using the Very Long Baseline Array and Very Large Array of the National Radio Astronomy Observatory. Optical monitoring of the stars was provided by the American Association of Variable Star Observers, the Variable Star Network and Dr. Bill Neely of the NF/Observatory. Water masers of found to exist in a region where a population inversion of the rotation transition of 22 GHz can be maintained by collisional pumping. The masers are identified as individual pockets of gas, which have the good velocity c...

The Mystery of the Tunguska Fireball

On 30 June 1908 a mysterious fireball exploded in the Siberian sky and flattened 2,000 square kilometres of the remote Tunguska forest. As no crater and no material from outer space were ever found, a meteorite could not have caused the Tunguska explosion. So what did? This 'grand dame of science mysteries' soon turns 100 but continues to seduce scientists and charlatans alike, all hoping to explain what caused the explosion. The scientists' suspects include a comet, an asteroid, a mini black hole, a rock of antimatter, a mirror matter asteroid, and a methane gas blast from below. X-files-type explanations include an alien spacecraft, a laser beam fired by extraterrestrials in an attempt to communicate with the earthlings, and an early experiment in nuclear physics which got out of hand. Numerous websites, conspiracy theories and sensational TV documentaries on the Fireball abound. In a fast-moving and non-technical narrative The Tunguska Fireball discusses all theories and then analyses the evidence to point an accusing finger at a prime suspect.

Cosmic Implications of Ponderomotive Wave Forces

Cosmic Implications of Ponderomotive Wave Forces

This book explores the ponderomotive wave forces of space plasma, which have implications for a large number of cosmic plasma phenomena. Plasma is a state of matter comprising an equal amount of negative (electrons) and positive (ions) charged particles. The ionized state is the dominating state of matter in the cosmos for stars, galaxies and their corresponding intermediate regions. This book discusses the plasma state and its corresponding theoretical implications based on the analysis of space plasma data. The theory of ponderomotive forcing offers a most important tool for the analysis of “in situ” plasma data of acceleration processes in the terrestrial and Martian plasma environment. In addition, the solar wind interaction with objects in the solar system also provides a roadmap for the analysis and interpretations of other stellar and galactic objects, out of reach for direct “in-situ” measurements.
