Judgement and Salvation
This volume deals with the redaction history of the Book of Micah vis-à-vis the alternation of the oracles of judgement and the oracles of salvation in chapters 2-5. The first part of the book offers a brief discussion of the most important hypotheses to account for the alternation of doom and hope that have been put forward over the last three or four decades: the composition model, the dialogue model and the redaction-historical model. The second part of the book offers a detailed study of the text of Micah 2-5 followed by a thorough analysis of the form and literary development of the individual pericopes. The study is concluded by a fresh presentation of the redaction history of the Book of Micah.

A Landmark in Turbulent Times
At the Synod of Dordrecht (1618–19), the deep questions of justification and faith, election and rejection, time and eternity, grace and free will, the individual and the body of Christ, Israel and the church, the acquisition of salvation through Christ and its application by His Spirit, baptism and regeneration, and especially the precise relationship between these, were at stake. These deep questions are addressed in this study. Lines are drawn to the historical, theological and political context of the time of the synod. Patristics and the Middle Ages are not absent, nor are the metaphysical questions related to these theological issues. Also the church polity of Dordt is discussed, especially the roots, influences and structures of its church order. The Traveling Salesman Problem
This book presents the latest findings on one of the most intensely investigated subjects in computational mathematics--the traveling salesman problem. It sounds simple enough: given a set of cities and the cost of travel between each pair of them, the problem challenges you to find the cheapest route by which to visit all the cities and return home to where you began. Though seemingly modest, this exercise has inspired studies by mathematicians, chemists, and physicists. Teachers use it in the classroom. It has practical applications in genetics, telecommunications, and neuroscience. The authors of this book are the same pioneers who for nearly two decades have led the investigation into the traveling salesman problem. They have derived solutions to almost eighty-six thousand cities, yet a general solution to the problem has yet to be discovered. Here they describe the method and computer code they used to solve a broad range of large-scale problems, and along the way they demonstrate the interplay of applied mathematics with increasingly powerful computing platforms. They also give the fascinating history of the problem--how it developed, and why it continues to intrigue us.
Piety in Practice and Print
The late Middle Ages provide us with a fascinating religious landscape. The quest for new religious ideals and intense spirituality can be observed in movements such as the Modern Devotion and the Franciscan Observance, marking the late fourteenth and fifteenth century with new institutional dynamics and the formation of a variety of religious communities. The dissemination of these new religious ideas and ideals profited from the advent of the printing press. It is these subjects that Koen Goudriaan, professor of Medieval History at VU University Amsterdam, has studied for decades. This volume, edited by Anna Dlabačová and Ad Tervoort, presents a collection of eleven of his best essays. It focuses on three themes: the institutional parameters of late medieval religious movements, the cult of remembrance, and the interaction between religious movements and the early printing press. Together, these essays provide a representative sample of Goudriaan’s substantial contribution to scholarship on late medieval history.
Idempotent Mathematics and Mathematical Physics
Idempotent mathematics is a rapidly developing new branch of the mathematical sciences that is closely related to mathematical physics. The existing literature on the subject is vast and includes numerous books and journal papers. A workshop was organized at the Erwin Schrodinger Institute for Mathematical Physics (Vienna) to give a snapshot of modern idempotent mathematics. This volume contains articles stemming from that event. Also included is an introductory paper by G. Litvinov and additional invited contributions. The resulting volume presents a comprehensive overview of the state of the art. It is suitable for graduate students and researchers interested in idempotent mathematics and tropical mathematics.
