The Art of Interruption

  • Categories: Art

This is the first monograph-length study that charts the coercive diplomacy of the administrations of Richard Nixon and Gerald Ford as practised against their British ally in order to persuade Edward Heath's government to follow a more amenable course throughout the 'Year of Europe' and to convince Harold Wilson's governments to lessen the severity of proposed defence cuts. Such diplomacy proved effective against Heath but rather less so against Wilson. It is argued that relations between the two sides were often strained, indeed, to the extent that the most 'special' elements of the relationship, that of intelligence and nuclear co-operation, were suspended. Yet, the relationship also witnessed considerable co-operation. This book offers new perspectives on US and UK policy towards British membership of the European Economic Community; demonstrates how US détente policies created strain in the 'special relationship'; reveals the temporary shutdown of US-UK intelligence and nuclear co-operation; provides new insights in US-UK defence co-operation, and re-evaluates the US-UK relationship throughout the IMF Crisis.

The Future of Drylands

Drylands have been cradles to some of the world’s greatest civilizations, and contemporary dryland communities feature rich and unique cultures. Dryland ecosystems support a surprising amount of biodiversity. Desertification, however, is a significant land degradation problem in the arid, semi-arid and dry sub-humid regions of the world. Deterioration of soil and plant cover has adversely affected 70% of the world’s drylands as a result of extended droughts as well as mismanagement of range and cultivated lands. The situation is likely to worsen with high population growth rates and accompanying land-use conflicts. The contributions to The Future of Drylands – an international scientif...

This study of the work of the influential French sociologist and anthropologist Pierre Bourdieu places his work firmly in the context of developments both in the French post-war intellectual field an din post-war French society as a whole. Set against the background of rapid change and upheaval that has characterised post-war French society, culture and politics, Bourdieu's work can be seen as offering a peculiarly perceptive analysis of France's problematic transition to an era of late capitalism. Proceeding thematically, this study traces the development of Bourdieu's thought, elucidating the relationship between the anthropological and sociological aspects of his work, examining his debt to Marx, Weber, Durkheim, Husserl, Merleau-Ponty and Bachelard, and highlighting his antagonistic relationship with a series of contemporary intellectual figures and movements - Barthes, Lefebvre, Touraine, Sartre, Fanon, Foucault, Derrida, structuralism and post-structuralism.

Vampires After Me

The Blood-borne Saga continues in this emotionally enthralling and riveting story of Dr. Paul Geraud, vampire and his human wife, Alexandra. Almost two years had passed since Paul ran from vampire hunters leaving his beloved Alex behind with the intent she should seek a normal life. He was certain she would never find him, she was adamant that she would---and she did. After an impasse, they decide to live near each other, but not together as they attempt to rekindle the deep love and trust they once shared. Emotional turmoil and rivalry develop when Alex meets vampire hunter, Jon Brennan, who romantically pursues her. Forced to choose between her vampire husband and a man who could eventually destroy him, things are further complicated when a jealous force from the past raises its ugly head bent on destroying her. In an effort to save Alex, Paul must trust his rival to hide her while he attempts to destroy the combined forces of vampires, "halflings", and mastiff dogs. He goes to battle insurmountable forces with the knowledge he may not survive, and if he survives, the fear that Alex may not choose him. .
