Conflict Cinemas in Northern Ireland and Brazil
This book focuses on the analysis of sensorial representations of violent images in contemporary films that portray embodied violation in urban environments of street clashes and prisons in Northern Ireland and Brazil during the late twentieth century. There is an emphasis on the representation of senses and how they play a significant role in structuring narratives and mapping the cinematic landscapes of conflict. Whether on the streets and prisons of Belfast, Derry, São Paulo or Rio, the attention is on the endangered body and its fragility or strength. Queer Methodology for Photography
This book presents new ways of approaching photographic discourse from a queer perspective, offering discussions on what a queering methodology for photography may entail by drawing links between artistic strategies in photographic practice and key theoretical concepts from photography theory, queer theory, critical theory, and philosophy. With different examples of conceptual perspectives, including representation, formalism, and mediumlessness, it seeks to diversify queer methodology for photography. While primarily addressing photography, this book is entwined with broader philosophical questions concerning identity, difference, and the creations of systems of thought that limit the possibilities of existence to binary categorisation. It proposes a new concept of the photographic image that addresses its materiality, in the form of the poetic and the political, in relationship to a generative principle that is named as a queer quality: the photograph’s ability to voice queer concerns also beyond its role as representation. This book will be of interest to scholars working in photography, art history, queer studies, new materialism, and posthumanism.
Exploring NORDIC COOL in Literary History
How did Nordic culture become associated with the fuzzy brand “cool”, as by default? In Exploring NORDIC COOL in Literary History twenty-one scholars in collaboration question the seemingly natural fit between “Nordic” and “Cool” by investigating its variegated trajectories through literary history, from medieval legends to digital poetry. At the same time, the elasticity and polysemy of the word “cool” become a means to explore Nordic literary history afresh. It opens up a rich diversity of theoretical and methodological approaches within a regional framework and reveals hitherto unseen links between familiar and less familiar tracks and sites. Following diverse paths of “Nordic cool” in respect to – among other things – nature, survival, love, whiteness, style, economics, heroism and colonialism, this book challenges all-too-recognisable narratives, and underlines the sheer knowledge potential of literary historical research.

Die Beiträger*innen präsentieren interdisziplinäre Ansätze an der Schnittstelle von Visueller Kultur, Kunstgeschichte, Soziologie, Politikwissenschaft und Visueller Politik. Der Sammelband stellt somit einen Werkzeugkasten für bildanalytischen Methoden bereit, wobei der Unmittelbarkeit des visuellen Materials ein Nacheinander des Lesens gegenübergestellt wird.
Plots: Literary Form and Conspiracy Culture
This edited collection contributes to the study of conspiracy culture by analysing the relationship of literary forms to the formation, reception, and transformation of conspiracy theories. Conspiracy theories are narratives, and their narrative form provides the structure within which their ‘readers’ situate themselves when interpreting the world and its history. At the same time, conspiracist interpretations of the world may then be transmediated into works of literature and import popular discourse into narrative structures. The suppression and disappearance of books themselves may generate conspiracy theories and become co-opted into political dissent. Additionally, literary criticism itself is shown to adopt conspiracist modes of interpretation. By examining conspiracy plots as literary plots, with narrative, rhetorical, and symbolic characteristics, this volume is the first systematic study of how conspiracy culture in American and European history is the consequence of its interactions with literature. This book will be of great interest to researchers of conspiracy theories, literature, and literary criticism.

Herausfordernd sind zugleich die vieldeutigen Strukturen in global entgrenzter Kultur, sozialen Ordnungen und Identitätsvorstellungen. Demgegenüber sind weltweit reaktionäre und antidemokratische Schließungsbewegungen zu beobachten, die dieser Vagheit mit binären Vorstellungen von scheinbar klarer Eindeutigkeit begegnen. Ambiguität auszuhalten und zu gestalten ist darum umso mehr künstlerische wie politische Bildungsaufgabe!
