The ultimate document of the emerging Hip Hop scene from 1980-1989, before it became the multi-million dollar industry it is today. Back in the day, it involved rappers, DJs and painters, not gangsters and guns. The streets, not corporations, set the standards for style and Shabazz was on the scene, photographing people hangin' in Harlem, kickin' it in Queens and cold chillin' in Brooklyn. From Kangol caps to Gazelle glasses, gold rope chains and door knocker earrings, Back in the Days has it all for readers who know what 'keepin' it real' really means!

Photo albums from the archives of the iconic chronicler of New York's 1980s rap, hip-hop and Black culture The influential Brooklyn-based photographer Jamel Shabazz has been making portraits of New Yorkers for more than 40 years, creating an archive of cultural shifts and struggles across the city. His portraits of different communities underscore the street as a space for self-presentation, whether through fashion or pose. In every instance Shabazz aims, in his words, to represent individuals and communities with "honor and dignity." This book--awarded the Gordon Parks Foundation/Steidl Book Prize--presents, for the first time, Shabazz's work from the 1970s to '90s as it exists in his archi...

Sights in the City

During the summer of 1980, under the direction of his father, a photographer, Jamel Shabazz armed himself with a Canon AE1 SLR camera and passionately photographed the urban landscape that he called home. New York City-"the city that never sleeps"-was the ideal epicenter to photograph because of its 24-hour subway system and the many businesses that are open late into the night. Never without a dull moment, New York's energy inspired him to use the streets as a canvas for the majority of his work for over 35 years. Photographing in the streets put Shabazz in the heart of all of the action-he carried his camera everywhere, always set and at the ready. Like a fisherman seeking a fruitful catch, Shabazz ventured into locations full of life and uncertainty in hopes of capturing a unique moment. More importantly, he sought to gain insight into the conditions of the larger world and its inhabitants. Sights in the City is a testament to Shabazz's visual journey, contianing 120 color and black-and-white photographs, most of which have never been published. His images are both intimate and provocative in nature, each having its own DNA.

At age nine, Jamel Shabazz was introduced to photography by his father, who kept a signed copy of Leonard Freed's Black in White America on the family's coffee table. Intrigued by Freed's provocative images of both Southern and urban life, Shabazz knew then it was his calling to document his community and the people who gave it life. Photography has given Shabazz a sense of purpose, allowing him to connect with the people he encounters on a daily basis. By connecting with his subjects, complimenting their style, and recognizing their potential-and then in turn publishing these images for the world at large to celebrate-in a small but meaningful way Shabazz has been able to counteract the dam...

A Time Before Crack

Once upon a time before crack, Jamel Shabazz was on the scene, working the streets of New York City, capturing the faces and places of an era that have long since disappeared. Once upon a time before crack, inner city communities were blighted by poverty and unemployment–but not by the drug wars that tore families apart, destroying lives with needless violence and mindless addiction. Once upon a time before crack, pride and style were as inseparable as a beatbox and mixtape, or as a pair of shoes and matching purse. Once upon a time before crack, Jamel Shabazz was on the scene, working the streets of New York City, capturing the faces and places of an era that have long since disappeared. ...
