Building Structures

The comprehensive reference on the basics of structural analysis and design, now updated with the latest considerations of building technology Structural design is an essential element of the building process, yet one of the most difficult to learn. While structural engineers do the detailed consulting work for a building project, architects need to know enough structural theory and analysis to design a building. Most texts on structures for architects focus narrowly on the mathematical analysis of isolated structural components, yet Building Structures looks at the general concepts with selected computations to understand the role of the structure as a building subsystem—without the compl...

In a remote city on the edge of two worlds, where blood has power and water is more precious than freedom, three far-flung friends unite on a quest to save their families. Sal Hrvati’s estranged father has brought more into the world than the woman he loved. Instead of saving her from the Void Beneath, he has summoned an unknown creature — a creature with a mission of its own and a past that stretches back to the beginning of the world. The quest to find both of them entangles Sal and his companions in a hunt for magical treasure on the floor of the Divide, a mighty crack in the earth inhabited by creatures that are not remotely human. Desert landscapes and dirigibles feature in a fast-paced fantasy that combines romance, adventure, and humor with an original take on magic. The Books of the Cataclysm take inspiration from many arcane and mythological sources. In positing that this world is just one of many "realms," three of which are inhabited by humans during various stages of their lives, it begins in the present world but soon propels the reader to a landscape that is simultaneously familiar and fantastic.

Design for Earthquakes

It was in a diary that he kept while in prison in Paris that Sherwill gave the first indication that he had it in his mind to write a book. Faced with what he anticipated would be a very long term of imprisonment, in an entry dated 13th November, 1940, he wrote: "I think when I am really settled in, I will write a book on the German Occupation of the Bailiwick of Guernsey. Not a thriller but a fair and honest book..." Early in 1943, together with a large party of other islanders, he was deported from Guernsey to Ilag VII Laufen in Bavaria. Here he began to work on his book. However, on 29th June, 1943, some four and half months after his arrival, having been elected by his fellow internees, Sherwill "became pretty fully occupied as British Camp Senior for the rest of the 'duration' and so did not continue my literary activities." Ambrose Sherwill, by then Sir Ambrose, resumed writing his memoirs after retiring from the office of Bailiff of Guernsey in 1960.

Hudson

The village of Hudson greets visitors with signs stating, Pride of the Prairie. The first settlers arrived in Hudson Township in 1829, settling near a Potawatomi Indian village about 1 mile west of where Hudson now stands. The boulder identifying the last stand of the Potawatomi village in McLean County was placed near the villages origin in 1920. The boyhood home of the famous author and philosopher Elbert Hubbard, built in 1857, still stands at Broadway and Walnut Streets. Constructed in 1929, the man-made Lake Bloomington offers both residential and recreation areas. The Evergreen Lake area includes a county park with camping, picnic areas, and a beach. In Hudson, readers will catch glimpses of these things and more: the past 175 years of people, agriculture, organizations, churches, and schoolsall built on the strong foundation of the early settlers.
