Mark Them Which Walk

Mark Them Which Walk The sequel to The Apothecary’s Ointment. In the previous story, disappointment in a trusted friend and mentor had given Melvin Heath a temporary setback and left him disillusioned and uncertain, but hopeful. At this low point in Heath’s spiritual life following the downfall of his mentor, when he found himself bewildered and adrift, an older friend had encouraged him with these words: Cursed be the man that trusteth in man . . . but Blessed is theman that trusteth in the Lord, and whose hope the Lord is. In the years that followed, Melvin remembered these lines from the prophet, Jeremiah. Through his experiences, they proved their worthiness as a guiding principle in his life. As Melvin regains his spiritual equilibrium, the adverse winds of tribulation assail him anew. With his Lord and Savior as an unfailing beacon, Heath steers a steady course through the troubled waters of religious politics.

The Apothecary's Ointment

The year is 1952. Selective Service and the military draft are uppermost in the minds of many eighteen to twenty-two year-olds. College students in good academic standing are granted deferments. Melvin Heath, a younger-ministerial student at Bradbury College has one. Driven by doubts about his ``calling to the ministry,'' Melvin drops out of college before the end of his fourth semester to join the U.S. Air Force. He sets out on a religious odyssey that takes him through military training, a rewarding tour of duty in Europe, a return to Bradbury College to resume his preparation for the seminary, disillusionment leading to a final break with Bradbury and the denomination, and his transfer to the engineering school of the state university to finish his education. His hunger for truth and understanding carries him along in his search for a resolution of the inner conflict that torments him.

Mathematics for the Physical Sciences

The book provides a bridge from courses in general physics to the intermediate-level courses in classical mechanics, electrodynamics and quantum mechanics. The author bases the mathematical discussions on specific physical problems to provide a basis for developing mathematical intuition.

Understanding the Universe

Intended for undergraduate non-science majors, satisfying a general education requirement or seeking an elective in natural science, this is a physics text, but with the emphasis on topics and applications in astronomy. The perspective is thus different from most undergraduate astronomy courses: rather than discussing what is known about the heavens, this text develops the principles of physics so as to illuminate what we see in the heavens. The fundamental principles governing the behaviour of matter and energy are thus used to study the solar system, the structure and evolution of stars, and the early universe. The first part of the book develops Newtonian mechanics towards an understanding of celestial mechanics, while chapters on electromagnetism and elementary quantum theory lay the foundation of the modern theory of the structure of matter and the role of radiation in the constitution of stars. Kinetic theory and nuclear physics provide the basis for a discussion of stellar structure and evolution, and an examination of red shifts and other observational data provide a basis for discussions of cosmology and cosmogony.

Hypergeometric Functions and Their Applications

Mathematics is playing an ever more important role in the physical and biological sciences, provoking a blurring of boundaries between scientific disciplines and a resurgence of interest in the modern as well as the clas sical techniques of applied mathematics. This renewal of interest, both in research and teaching, has led to the establishment of the series: Texts in Applied Mathematics (TAM). The development of new courses is a natural consequence of a high level of excitement on the research frontier as newer techniques, such as numerical and symbolic computer systems, dynamical systems, and chaos, mix with and reinforce the traditional methods of applied mathematics. Thus, the purpose o...

The Lip of Truth

On visits to his bank, Mark becomes attracted to a recently hired teller. He works up the courage to invite her out for dinner and learns that it is not a good idea because of a long-standing difficulty between their fathers. He begins to ask questions of others in his Christian association who might help him understand why events from years past now impinge on his own life. His father is sorely displeased with the opening of old wounds and rebukes him sharply for his pursuit of “forbidden fruit.” The story—with overtones from the houses of Montague and Capulet—evolves from here.

This publication is the first of a series titled The United States Air Force in Southeast Asia. It tells the story of the Air Force's involvement in the region from the end of the second World War until the major infusion of American troops into Vietnam in 1965. During these years, and most noticeably after 1961, the Air Force's principal role in Southeast Asia was to advise the Vietnamese Air Force in its struggle against insurgents seeking the collapse of the Saigon Government. This story includes some issues of universal applicability to the Air Force: the role of air power in an insurgency, the most effective way to advise a foreign ally, and how to coordinate with other American agencie...

Frontiers in Fractional Calculus

This book brings together eleven topics on different aspects of fractional calculus in a single volume. It provides readers the basic knowledge of fractional calculus and introduces advanced topics and applications. The information in the book is presented in four parts: 1. Fractional Diffusion Equations: (i) solutions of fractional diffusion equations using wavelet methods, (ii) the maximum principle for time fractional diffusion equations, (iii) nonlinear sub-diffusion equations. 2. Mathematical Analysis: (i) shifted Jacobi polynomials for solving and identifying coupled fractional delay differential equations, (ii) the monotone iteration principle in the theory of Hadamard fractional dela...
