Collection consists of: papers and correspondence regarding the acquisition of land for constructing railways; legal documents and plats pertaining to land forfeitures carrying Gibbes' signature in his capacity as an agent for the South Carolina Secretary of State; and a typescript letter clarifying Gibbes' involvement in a trip to Europe in December 1862 as an official of the Confederate States government "to assist James Spence in disposing of 15 millions in cotton loan bonds."
