How Do We Get There
At the end of the 1960s there began a sizeable surge among some of the most militant New Left activists back into the Old Left and to the vanguard strategy for defeating capitalists. This small book was written in opposition to that trend. It is an exploration of what an egalitarian, directly democratic strategy might look like.
A Eulogy for Capitalism
After thirty years of counter-revolution in the USA and worldwide (1970-2000, and continuing) it was heartening that a renewed anti-capitalist movement burst on the scene around 2000. It seems to be gathering strength, with many millions finally connecting the dots between capitalism and their many miseries. Whether this movement can ever defeat the global capitalist ruling class and thus save civilization and the earth is doubtful. But this is our only hope. Perhaps the essays presented here can help in some small way to further that revolution.

Fleeing Herod
When the Holy Family fled to Egypt to escape the wrath of King Herod Antipas, they journeyed for three years throughout Egypt, mainly along the Nile, to keep Herod’s agents at bay. Using an ancient 4th century text written by Patriarch Theophilus of Alexandria as his guide, Cowan takes the reader on a fascinating journey through modern-day Egypt in the footsteps of the Holy Family, about the Delta region and up the Nile to a place called Mount Qussqam, where Mary, Joseph, and the infant Jesus resided for six months. The itinerary, according to Coptic tradition, was revealed to Theophilus in a dream. Documenting his journey, Cowan finds himself in the midst of a spiritual revolution going on in Egypt itself. He meets with monks and health workers, desert mystics and visionaries, all of whom have a stake in the story of the Holy Family’s journey, as they know it. Through their eyes the reader is drawn into a dramatic story of escape and miraculous interventions.
Getting Free
"Getting Free is a study of anarchist revolutionary strategy. Since it is obvious that we cannot discuss strategy without first deciding what it is that we are trying to achieve, I begin (after a short critique of capitalism) with a two-page sketch of the basic structure of an anarchist society (a free society, one based on direct democracy). It's beautifully simple and elegant, in my humble opinion. Next I consider obstacles to be overcome, and then review strategies that have failed so far. Then I map out an anarchist revolutionary strategy, first abstractly and then in concrete detail. Finally, I discuss some of the issues in more detail and bounce the whole thing off relevant literature. I try to completely reconceptualize the fight against capitalists, by shifting the focus away from seizing the state or the means of production, to seizing decision making."--Publisher.
