A History of Horoscopic Astrology
This thoroughly researched book is a history of the development of Western horoscopic astrology from its origin among the Babylonians and its subsequent creation in its present form by the Alexandrians down to modern times. Special attention is given to background history and to the working conditions and techniques used by astrologers during the last two thousand years. Numerous footnotes provide additional information and bibliographic references. A separate bibliography lists reference sources of particular importance. Two comprehensive indices containing more than 2,800 individual entries enable the reader to locate persons, publishers, topics, and book and periodical titles that are mentioned in the history. The book also contains discussions of several questions and topics relating to astrology. James Herschel Holden is Research Director of the American Federation of Astrologers and has been especially interested in the history of astrology.
Biographical Dictionary of Western Astrologers
This comprehensive biographical dictionary of more than 2,200 Western astrologers from the ancient times (beginning with the 2nd century B.C.) down to the early 20th century includes living persons born prior to 1936, as well as some astrologers born in or after 1936 who are deceased. History is made by people, so biography is the basis of history. In this book the reader will find the names (and birth and death data) of most of the prominent Western astrologers of the past and some indication of what they did in the field of astrology. It is thus possible to learn much about the history of astrology simply by reading the lengthier biographical entries. However, the main purpose of this book is to provide a ready reference and to give enough information about these astrologers to enable the reader "to get to know" them. Lists of books written by the astrologers are included along with, in some cases, excerpts from their work.
Five Medieval Astrologers
This book contains translations of five astrological treatises by Medieval astrologers: Albumasar: The Book of Flowers, an anthology of rules for Mundane Astrology; Ptolemy: The Centiloquy; Hermes Trismegistus: The Centiloquy; Bethen: The Centiloquy; Almansor: The One Hundred and Fifty Propositions. This is the first comprehensive publication of these treatises, which were translated by James Herschel Holden, Research Director of the American Federation of Astrologers. He is especially interested in Classical and Medieval astrological works.
Astrological Compendium
This book contains the Astrological Compendium of the late Classical astrologer Rhetorius the Egyptian. It contains his Explanation and Narration of The Whole Art of Astrology, and was translated from the Greek by James Herschel Holden, M.A., Research Director of the American Federation of Astrologers. Also included are the treatises by Teucer of Babylon on the Nature of the Signs of the Zodiac and the Nature of the Seven planets. Rhetorius was the last major astrological writer of the Classical period of Greek Astrology.
The Introduction to the Science of the Judgments of the Stars
Sahl lived in the first half of the 9th century. His five short treatises, Introduction to Astrology, The 50 Precepts, Judgments of Questions, Elections, and The Book of Times, appear to be the principal medieval source of rules for Horary Astrology and Elections. They constitute a corpus of detailed instruction for these two branches of Astrology. James Herschel Holden, the translator, is Research Director of the American Federation of Astrologers and is especially interested in early astrological works.
Porphyry the Philosopher
This book contains a translation of the Introduction to the Tetrabiblos written by famous third century philosopher Porphyry. It is a sort of Astrological Dictionary, defining most of the technical terms used by the Greek astrologers of the Classical Period. The volume also contains a translation of the short treatise on astrological technical terms by Serapio of Alexandria. About the translator: James Herschel Holden, M.A. is the Research Director of the American Federation of Astrologers and has been especially interested in Classical and Medieval astrological works.
Astrological Pioneers of America
A biographical dictionary of American astrologers: professionals, teachers, writers & students, it contains the names of persons born in 1923 or earlier, as well as those younger astrologers who have already passed away. The entries include birth data where it was available, biographical information & selected bibliographic listings. Foreign astrologers having some connection with American astrologers are included in an appendix. The American list comprises 1,300 names; exclusive of cross-references & the foreign list has 148 names.
Astrologia Gallica Book 16
This book is an English translation of Book 16 of the Astrologia Gallica. In the First Section, Morin explains the difference between Rays and Aspects, and he then discusses the natures of the aspects, why some of them are good and others bad, and finally he proposes a rational theory of the orbs of the aspects. The Second Section is devoted to Applications and Separations and Doryphories. The Third Section discusses the topic of Combustion with examples from Morin's own horoscope. Morin was a physician who became the most renowned of all French astrologers. He was appointed Royal Mathematician to King Louis XIII and was summoned to be present at the birth of the royal heir, the future King Louis XIV. James Herschel Holden is Research Director of the American Federation of Astrologers and has been especially interested in the Morin Method of horoscope interpretation.
