The stone axe, for example, invented some 2 million years ago in East Africa, enabled us to enter the human path of endless improvements through inventions. The taming of fire enabled us to cook food as well as leave the warmth of Africa and move to the frigid lands of the North. Edited with a Foreword by Leo de Freyne. It is impossible to write a synopsis of this book in terms of plot and themes. This is because it is a diary in form and, although cohesive, it has a myriad of themes. It is written over a period of twenty-six years and is set in six countries principally: Ireland, Spain, China, Poland, Estonia and the Sultanate of Oman. Other countries also appear: England, France, Germany, Russia and more. However, this is not a travel book, although travel is an important aspect of the book's structure. It is a story, though not a novel in the conventional sense of the word. The work is music-like in structure, with motifs reappearing both overtly and subtly. It is a work of philosophy, psychology, literary and art criticism, political and social commentary, and much more. The book is humorous too, and because all diarists take themselves somewhat seriously, some of the humour is not Patrick Black's intention.

Control and Optimisation of Process Systems

Advances in Chemical Engineering was established in 1960 and is the definitive serial in the area. It is one of great importance to organic chemists, polymer chemists, and many biological scientists. Written by established authorities in the field, the comprehensive reviews combine descriptive chemistry and mechanistic insight and yield an understanding of how the chemistry drives the properties. This volume focuses on control and optimisation of process systems. - Advances in Chemical Engineering was established in 1960 and is the definitive serial in the area. Advances in Chemical Engineering

Multi-scale analysis and simulation of chemical processing and reactions have received unprecedented attention in recent years; however, measurement technology focused on multi-scale structures, particularly on meso-scale phenomena, has not been sufficiently addressed. This volume of Advances in Chemical Engineering focuses on the "Characterization of Flow, Particles and Interfaces" to alert the chemical engineering community to this challenging issue presenting six meso-scale measurement technologies.
