A Bygone Yesterday is a remembrance written by a grandson of Samuel and Louise Freund, detailing their roots in 19th century Bohemia (now the Czech Republic) and their shoots in the New World, from New York Citys Yorkville neighborhood to Chicago and Florida. It is the history of one couple that stepped aboard a train in Central Europe on a spring day in 1891 and began a journey that would transform their lives and the lives of their descendants. Yet, at the same time, the books broad scope creates a biographical collage, putting flesh on a broad sweep of history. A Bygone Yesterday explores the lives of Samuel and Louise Freund, their ancestors, descendants and kinfolk, as well as the social and historic context of the times in which they lived, touching on, among other things, the restrictive and discriminatory family laws of 19th century Bohemia, early 20th century life in the Yorkville enclave of New York City, the tragedy of the Holocaust and the ultimate triumph of a warm and embracing family life.
Reclaiming Public Space through Intercultural Dialogue
The challenges rapid urbanisation encompasses are manifold, so are the efforts addressing sustainable and inclusive development frameworks. "Reclaiming Public Space through Intercultural Dialogue" is an intercultural and interdisciplinary initiative, which focuses on how social and spatial segregation can be overcome in metropolitan areas. Through joint research and teaching activities in the cities of Dortmund and Amman, three comprehensive topics emerged: urban transformation and the role of public space; social and cultural dimensions of cities; and nature-based planning approaches. The book compiles contributions to these topics from researchers, practitioners, and students, which were presented in an international conference held at the German Jordanian University in Madaba, Jordan, in November 2017.
Contested Transparencies, Social Movements and the Public Sphere
This edited collection examines the multi-faceted phenomenon of transparency, especially in its relation to social movements, from a range of multi-disciplinary viewpoints. Over the past few decades, transparency has become an omnipresent catch phrase in public and scientific debates. The volume tracks developments of ideas and practices of transparency from the eighteenth century to the current day, as well as their semantic, cultural and social preconditions. It connects analyses of the ideological implications of transparency concepts and transparency claims with their impact on the public sphere in general and on social movements in particular. In doing so, the book contributes to a better understanding of social conflicts and power relations in modern societies. The chapters are organized into four parts, covering the concept and ideology of transparency, historical and recent developments of the public sphere and media, the role of the state as an agent of surveillance, and conflicts over transparency and participation connected to social movements.
