Domestic Science is the sometimes intense, often whimsical, frequently moving and very appealing account of one year in the life of a food technology teacher, who is also a mother, wife and author. Sharing an abundance of magnificent feasts, glorious holidays and canny shopping, Jane Burdiak has created a vivid, absorbing and life-affirming world, full of colour and noise, and activity and thoughtfulness. Skilfully and charmingly written, Domestic Science is a satisfying read that will linger long in your thoughts.
Between the Stars
Spanning decades, Between the Stars is an enduring story of love and devotion. From adolescence to old age, life is not without its challenges. Living with the failings and misgivings and resolving them is a journey in itself and takes a lifetime. Apart from teaching in a large comprehensive school Louise fills her time absorbed in her writing and her desire to find out about her father's past. Having already unearthed two other families Louise feels that there is another to be discovered. For Louise, her husband's retirement proves a difficult episode. Increasingly he feels lost and isolated and whilst she is living on the edge, busy and fulfilled she fails to notice his growing frustration and sense of worthlessness. Against the backdrop of this fragile relationship, a tangle of intense emotions, guilt and fear are interspersed with moments of pure unadulterated love.
The Walk
For many, understandably, pending retirement brings feelings of uncertainty and apprehension. Starting in the spring of 2012 The Walk forges through the year. Sandwiched between the mundane domesticity (which, at times, are not without their frustrations), there is theatre and beauty - little accomplishments and precious glimpses of life which, when frantically working, can be completely overlooked. However, Jane Burdiak cleverly combines the minutiae of everyday life with the simple joys and enviable pleasures that abound creating a tempting lifestyle that is hard to resist.
The Sporting Widow
Ever since the 1966 World Cup, sport has featured in Jenny's day. Knowing little and caring even less about any sport, she has in that time absorbed facts and figures, rules, venues, and player's names from her husband Jim and the wall to wall coverage on television. The three stories, Jenny and Jim go Fishing, Weather Wine and Wickets and Brazil Nuts capture Jim's lifelong sporting passions, fishing, cricket and football. Threading through the aforesaid sports, other strands blur the picture, Jenny and Jim's loyal companionship, memories, travelling and people mingle, bringing the sports to life, making them real for Jenny. Subsequently for Jenny, her albeit limited knowledge of sport is no longer pigeonholed but can rub alongside her interests, her love of big skies and breaking waves.

A story about Connie being born, growing up and growing old. It describes her thoughts and aspirations. It focuses on the social issues of a working class family in the 50s and 60s.
