Jane McCulloch was once dubbed a ‘Renaissance woman’ by the great American soprano Jessye Norman, and her long career as a playwright, theatre and opera director, producer, lyricist, poet and latterly novelist is certainly testament to this. Jane’s has been ‘a life not without incident’ – to quote her husband, the theatre director Toby Robertson. Growing up with fiercely gifted but troubled parents, she found herself with a front-row seat during a golden age of British theatre before forging her own career, running theatre companies both in the UK and abroad and working with the likes of Derek Jacobi and Judi Dench. Inheriting her father’s ability to ‘collect’ celebrities (to the occasional exasperation of her children), Jane proves a born raconteur, describing, amongst other things, how she met Jackie Kennedy Onassis in an accidental Valium haze or managed to charm both Noël Coward and John Betjeman while still a teenager. Beyond the clear-eyed, often moving stories, however, what emerges is an inspirational tale of a woman’s fight for her survival in a very tough profession.

Probably the finest genealogical record ever compiled on the people of ancient Mecklenburg County, North Carolina, this work consists of extensive source records and documented family sketches. Collectively, what is presented here is a veritable history of a people--a "tribe" of people--who settled in the valley between the Yadkin and Catawba rivers more than two hundred years ago. The object of the book is to show where these people originated and what became of them and their descendants. Included among the source records are the various lists of the Signers of the Mecklenburg Declaration; Abstracts of Some Ancient Items from Mecklenburg County Records; Marriage Records and Relationships of Mecklenburg People; List of Public Officials of Mecklenburg County, 1775-1785; First U.S. Census of 1790 by Districts; Tombstone Inscriptions; and Sketches of the Mecklenburg Signers. This rich pictorial history is the first to feature the entire township of New Scotland. Located west-southwest of the city of Albany, the township covers a large area in the center of Albany County. The earliest European settlers arrived in the mid-1600s and over the next 150 years, they were followed by immigrants from Holland, Scotland, England, and other countries. New Scotland Township contains photographs dating from 1840 to 1980, including dozens of formerly unpublished ones. Both the photographs and captions contain an amazing amount of detail that creates a vivid account of town life over the course of more than a century. The book celebrates the people, their homes and occupations, as well as the community's schools, churches, and means of transportation. It explores the area's extraordinary landforms, from the Helderberg Mountains, Thacher State Park, Clarksville caves, Onesquethaw Falls to the Vly, Normanskill, and Onesquethaw creeks. It highlights the only remaining carriage sheds in Albany County, where part of the famous Anti-Rent Wars occurred, and the remains of a structure called the Castle, where Bouck White became famous for his Bouckware pottery.
