SHORT LISTED FOR THE FORWARD POETRY PRIZE FOR BEST FIRST COLLECTION 2005 SHORT LISTED FOR THE WHITBREAD POETRY PRIZE 2005 Reading Marabou is like browsing through an album of snapshots, coming across fraught, frozen moments in the lives of intriguingly enigmatic characters. There's an Egyptian mummy, an Elizabethan shoemaker and a flock of Cumbrian sheep; Oscar Wilde, a talking owl and a pair of Renaissance princesses. In this collection, Yeh illuminates the concept of personal identity with startling originality and freshness. Borrowing from the languages of fashion, espionage and revenge tragedy, her taut, pressure-packed lines combine vivid imagery and bold confession to reveal profound emotional truths.

Funny, heartbreaking, haunting: Jane Yeh's poems open windows onto utterly strange - and eerily familiar - worlds. Lonely ghosts hover around children on their way to school; lilies whisper among themselves, their heads 'filled with pollen and boredom'. Three solemn children in a Van Dyck portrait gaze out into their futures. Moving between high art and pop culture, Yeh creates richly textured poems, their lyrical beauty cut with a dark wit. How do we face death, how survive loss? What does it take to carry on? 'O tempura, O monkeys'.

A Poetry Book Society Spring 2019 Recommendation. In Discipline, her third collection, Jane Yeh depicts a haunting and hilarious variety of lives, from an endangered young rhinoceros to the denizens of the 1980s New York club scene. These multifaceted poems explore what identity isn't and is, as performance, as struggle, as change, as art, with penetrating wit, channeling the voices of outsiders, artists, misfits, and others. Discipline inhabits the space between the real and the surreal, a mash-up of deadpan humour and heartbreaking imagery where novelty T-shirts and lady astronaut centaurs can coexist. The poems are triggered by videos, paintings and installations by contemporary artists, animals and city life. They bristle with striking details and observations. Imaginary landscapes converge with episodes from recent history: power, resistance and the structures of oppression are seen inexorably in operation. These miniature dramas perform their own autopsies: 'Sweet, then sour. My lips the colour of Doubt'.

Shanghai Love

In this fascinating book, Catherine Yeh explores the Shanghai entertainment world at the close of the Qing dynasty. Established in the 1850s outside of the old walled city, the Shanghai Foreign Settlements were administered by Westerners and so were not subject to the strict authority of the Chinese government. At the center of the dynamic new culture that emerged was the courtesan, whose flamboyant public lifestyle and conspicuous consumption of modern goods set a style that was emulated by other women as they emerged from the "inner quarters" of traditional Chinese society. Many Chinese visitors and sojourners were drawn to the Foreign Settlements. Men of letters seeking a living outside o...

Spells are poems; poetry is spelling. Spell-poems take us into a place where the right words can influence the universe. Spells: 21st Century Occult Poetry brings together 30 contemporary voices exploring the territory between the occult and the subversion of patriarchy. Occult poetics is a method of self-determination and transformation through a summoning of the world, through remaking reality. Capable of holding the contradictions of identity and trauma, poetry as magical language is talismanic, offering a sacred space away from everyday experiences of oppression. Spells honours the world of feeling, the world of the unconscious, the world of the body: desires and practices that are messy...

Poetry. Jane Gregory's mystifying second collection, YEAH NO, begins with a "Knock knock," inviting the reader into a realmwhere "Everything is a pattern / of yesses and no." Within these pages we find Gregory constructing a multivalent world--ripe with struggle, prophecy, and, by the end, a resemblance of hope. Using her highly-tuned sensibility throughout, Gregory guides us through the anxieties of this journey by inventing new and enigmatic forms filled with sonic experimentation and polyphony. YEAH NO builds upon the singular vision found within her previous collection, MY ENEMIES, and continues her elegant and challenging address to poetry. "At the beginning it feels almost awkward (as ...
