Catholic Sisters, Narratives of Authority, and the Native American Boarding Schools, 1847-1918 brings to light a largely unknown of history of the Catholic Native American Boarding Schools run by Catholic Sisters. Elisabeth C. Davis examines four schools, the first one established by Catholic women in the United States in 1847 and the last ending in 1918. Using previously unexplored archival material, Davis examines how Catholic Sisters established authority over their students and the local indigenous communities. In doing so, Davis sheds new light on the role of women during the eras of American expansion, settler imperialism, and the boarding school era.

This study demonstrates how African American artists active since the 1970s have instrumentalized performance for the camera to intervene in existing representations of Black and Brown people in America and beyond. Majewska argues that producing carefully designed photographs, films, and videos via performance became a key strategy for dismantling the conceptions of race and gender fixed by US popular culture, jurisprudence, and pseudoscience. Studying the work of Adrian Piper, Glenn Ligon, Lyle Ashton Harris, Senga Nengudi, Maren Hassinger, Howardena Pindell, David Hammons, and Pope.L, this book examines the ways in which these artists incorporate their bodies and personal experience into their respective performances, simultaneously courting and foreclosing autobiographical readings. This volume examines the evolution of the depictions of black femininity in French visual culture as a prism through which to understand the Global North’s destructive relationship with the natural world. Drawing on a broad spectrum of archives extending back to the late 18th century – paintings, fashion plates, prints, photographs, and films – this study traces the intricate ways a patriarchal imperialism and a global capitalism have paired black women with the realm of nature to justify the exploitation both of people and of ecosystems. These dehumanizing and speciesist strategies of subjugation have perpetuated interlocking patterns of social injustice and environmental depletion that constitute the most salient challenges facing humankind today. Through a novel approach that merges visual studies, critical race theory, and animal studies, this interdisciplinary investigation historicizes the evolution of the boundaries between human and non-human animals during the modern period.
