This book takes the Dust Bowl story beyond Depression America to describe the ‘dust bowl’ concept as a transnational phenomenon, where during World War Two, US and Australian national mythologies converged. Dust Bowl begins with Depression America, the New Deal and the US Dust Bowl where massive dust storms darkened the skies of the Great Plains and triggered a major national and international media event and generated imagery describing a failed yeoman dream, Dust Bowl refugees, and the coming of a new American Desert. Dust Bowl traces the evolution of this imagery to Australia, World War Two and New Deal-inspired stories of conservation-mindedness, soil erosion and enemies, sheep-farmers and traitors, creeping deserts and human extinction, super-human housewives and natural disaster and finally, grand visions of a nation-building post-war scheme for Australia’s iconic Snowy River‒that vision became the Snowy Mountains Hydro-electric Scheme.

Transnationalism, Nationalism and Australian History
Using Australian history as a case study, this collection explores the ways national identities still resonate in historical scholarship and reexamines key moments in Australian history through a transnational lens, raising important questions about the unique context of Australia’s national narrative. The book examines the tension between national and transnational perspectives, attempting to internationalize the often parochial nation-based narratives that characterize national history. Moving from the local and personal to the global, encompassing comparative and international research and drawing on the experiences of researchers working across nations and communities, this collection brings together diverging national and transnational approaches and asks several critical research questions: What is transnational history? How do new transnational readings of the past challenge conventional national narratives and approaches? What are implications of transnational and international approaches on Australian history? "I wrote FOOTPRINTS WEST in 1990 which included the Masters, Meeker, Mayo, Wheeler and Tomlinson families. They are the ancestors of my mother, Florence Elva (Masters) Fenn. Since the book was published, addititonal information has been obtained on the early ancestors as well as additions to the family. I have updated and corrected the family information. The Mayo family has had two generations removed due to lack of evidence. Those generations were contributed fot FOOTPRINTS WEST and I did not research their validity. The Masters and Wheeler families have had generations added. All of the other families have more recent information on living members of the families."--Preface.
