The Practice of Everyday Life

Michel de Certeau considers the uses to which social representation and modes of social behavior are put by individuals and groups, describing the tactics available to the common man for reclaiming his own autonomy from the all-pervasive forces of commerce, politics, and culture. In exploring the public meaning of ingeniously defended private meanings, de Certeau draws on an immense theoretical literature in analytic philosophy, linguistics, sociology, semiology, and anthropology--to speak of an apposite use of imaginative literature.

School and democracy

As indicated in the title, the axis around which the content of this work revolves are the relations between education and democracy. If it is reasonable to suppose that democracy is not taught through undemocratic practices, it must not be inferred that the democratization of internal relations within the school is a sufficient condition for preparing young people for active participation in the democratization of society. It is not simply a matter of choosing between authoritarian or democratic relations within the classroom, but rather of articulating the work developed in schools with the process of democratization of society. The pedagogical practice contributes in a specific way, that is to say, pedagogically, to the democratization of society insofar as one understands how the question of democracy is posed with regard to the proper nature of pedagogical work, which, in turn, implies a real inequality (at the point of departure) and a possible equality (at the point of arrival).

La Clase Mágica: Imagining Optimal Possibilities in a Bilingual Community of Learners vividly captures the social and intellectual developments and the promises of an ongoing after-school project called La Clase Mágica. It is a blow-by-blow description of the early transformations of a project that began as an educational activity and slowly but deliberately turned into a social action project whose aim was to serve those with low economic and political means and little access to educational resources. This multivocal account details research in action for effectively serving Spanish-English bilingual speakers from a Mexican origin community, as well as--on a broader level--the diverse pop...

Encyclopedia of Addictions [2 volumes]

This two volume set contains frank and factual information about symptoms, causes, effects, prevention, and treatment of substance abuse—alcohol, nicotine, and drugs—and of behavioral addictions such as eating disorders, pathological gambling, and compulsive sexual activity. Including the most up-to-date research, the addiction entries are based largely on criteria established by the American Psychiatric Association in its Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders.Tracing the history of the debate over whether addiction is a choice or a disease, the volumes explain how genetic and biological findings support the disease concept while lifestyle choices affect the course of the disease. Graphics and discussions of the brain structures that support this self-reinforcing mechanism illustrate why treatments that obstruct the pathway are showing such promise.

Landscape as Territory

Landscape as Territory is a cartographic book project that critically addresses the agency of architects in the so-called ‘Urban Age,’ understanding the notion of ‘territory’ as a field of design praxis through which Interconnected landscapes are produced. Territory, understood as a ‘political technology,’ has the capacity to involve architects and designers into complex social, political, technical, legal, strategic and economic processes that are both historical and geographical engines of contemporary urbanization. Islands in Northern Norway. Territorial praxis is interrogated in a collection of threaded theory and design contributions where essays pose key questions that are addressed through projective cartographies, unfolding arguments related to three sections: (1) territory, (2) critical cartographies and (3) agency.
