The imbibing country clubbers were tooting their New Years Eve miniature horns, prematurely. An elderly man at the adjoining table is obviously choking on an under chewed piece of steak, Jason hollers, “can you talk?” The gasping man shakes his head, “no!” The Heimlich maneuver fails. Jason yanks the tablecloth and the dishes crash to the floor. He lifts the cyanotic, gasping man to the table with his head extended over the edge. He remembers Dr Heifer’s words “The most important thing to remember in performing a tracheotomy is to extend the neck and the trachea will project forward.” He grabs a steak knife, makes an incision into the wind pipe below the voice box and inserts a horn as a make shift tracheotomy tube. With each breath, the tooting horn improves the color of the man from blue to pink and ushers in the New Year.

The poetry and stories in section 1 are from Families published separately in conjunction with Writershed, the Women Writers Workshop, a group Kay founded in 2011, now on Amazon and Kindle. The other stories are a selection from new projects Kay is working on. The Spinster is an extract from her biography of her mothers life. The Snowchild is an extract from her childrens book Joshuas Globe. Kay hopes to complete these projects in the near future as well as help the Writershed group to put together their second book. The best seller is still a long way in the future, and Kay has no illusions about how tough it is to get started as a writer. But one word of advice she can give to all those budding writers out there is to write every day and make writing part of your life as that book inside you will never happen just talking about it.

For the major broadcast networks, the heyday of made-for-TV movies was 20th Century programming like The ABC Movie of the Week and NBC Sunday Night at the Movies.
