Your brokenness is not the end of the story. It's time to heal. Any of us can get stuck in our struggle. Jesus came to set us free and give us life--abundant life--but while we believe it for everyone else, it's hard to accept his forgiveness and grace for ourselves. We continue in our old ways, living as one with no hope because we're afraid of failing if we try to get better. But what if brokenness--the array of behaviors and symptoms that show us that all is not as it should be with us--isn't all there is? What if we can change? As a licensed therapist and a man who's dealt with his own problems--including childhood trauma, alcohol abuse, drug use, and bouts of depression--Jason VanRuler ...

What are you willing to cry out for? Bartimaeus knew Jesus was his only hope for healing, for a better life. So even as the crowd jostled him, scolded him, told him to be quiet, he unleashed a desperate plea and SHOUTED LOUDER. This time Jesus stopped and said nine words that changed the trajectory of his life--and will change yours: "What do you want me to do for you?" Unpacking this unforgettable encounter between Bartimaeus and Jesus with his unique humor, storytelling, and fist-pumping motivation, Chuck E. Tate shows how it can also be your story. Revealing faith-building biblical truth and wisdom, he shows how to · overcome obstacles to boldly approach God · rise above resistance to receive from God · dream big and believe in God for the impossible · move from desperately calling for Jesus to passionately following Him God always does exceedingly more than we can ask or imagine. So go ahead and SHOUT--and receive all he has for you.

Distinctions of Reason and Reasonable Distinctions is an intellectual biography of John Wallis (1616-1703), professor of mathematics at Oxford for over half a century. His career spans the political tumult of the English Civil Wars, the religious upheaval of the Church of England, and the fascinating developments in mathematics and natural philosophy. His ability to navigate this terrain and advance human learning in the academic world was facilitated by his use of the Jesuit Francisco Suarez’s theory of distinctions. This Roman Catholic’s philosophy in the hands of a Protestant divine fostered an instrumentalism necessary to bridge the old and new. With this tool, Wallis brought modern science into the university and helped form the Royal Society.

Learning Messiah

Israel’s election, calling, and history make up a big part of Scripture. It could be said that they belong to the “DNA of the Bible.” But why is it then that the Christian narrative about the Messiah, Israel, and the nations, often seemed to have and sometimes even still has a different “genetic structure”? Does Israel—together with its election and promises—leave God’s stage through a side door, when Jesus appears on stage? Does a changing of roles take place, within a different story? Does the Messiah function within it as some kind of “black hole” in which the eternal election and calling of Israel disappear? How do we read God’s way? The Holocaust made us realize that our de-Jew-ized reading and preaching of Scripture contributed in various ways to this catastrophe. And we find ourselves confronted by the question: How does the narrative of the Bible then look when the whole of Scripture plays a decisive role, and the faithfulness of God toward Israel stays in the center? This book presents an answer to these questions, calling us to learn to read God’s way anew, and to walk in it.
