Jean Simmons
Arriving in Hollywood in 1950 to launch her American film career, Jean Simmons (1929-2010) had already appeared in 18 British films and was best known for her portrayal of Ophelia in Laurence Olivier's Hamlet. She soon became a favorite female face working with some of filmmaking's greats and acted opposite many Hollywood A-listers. Two of her most popular films--Guys and Dolls (1955) and Spartacus (1960)--were international box-office hits, and in her seven decades-long career she collected numerous awards and honors including a Golden Globe, an Emmy, and two Oscar nominations as Best Actress. While honoring the career and the thought of Jean Gayon (1949-2018), this book showcases the continued relevance of Gayon’s interdisciplinary work and illustrates his central place in the community of historians and philosophers of the life sciences. Chapters in this book address Jean Gayon’s intellectual trajectory from historical epistemology to the philosophy of biology, the nature and scope of his philosophical approach to the history of science, and his unique contributions to the history and epistemology of biological concepts and theories. Drawing on published and unpublished sources, the book explores some of Gayon’s most significant contributions to the philosophy, history, and social studies of biology.

Darryl Jean's Crew: A Boyish Thing
Following a busy evening playing pirates, Darryl M. Jean and his friends were exhausted. They lay on the grass looking at the blue sky and the moving clouds. After a long moment observing the scenery, they discussed what they wanted to be when they grew up. The quietest of the boys, when pressed by his friends on what he wanted to be when he grew up, he simply replied that he wanted to be a vampire. The boys were amazed. Never had they thought of that. Prince mentioned a vampire was spotted at the graveyard, and he planned to meet him there. The children quickly gave way to their imagination. They formed a vampire club and all agreed to accompany Prince for the initiation. The children woke up in the middle of the night to meet the vampire, but when they were spotted in the streets and later at the graveyard, the whole town was set in terror.
