A Gateway from the Eastern Mediterranean to India
Interdisciplinary studies about the connections between India and the Mediterranean world in antiquity have been growing in the last few decades. These have followed a range of approaches. This book focuses on one segment of the maritime world geographically defined as the Red Sea and its surrounding areas. This regional perspective is necessary to understand the dynamics of exchange. A large number of texts in Greek and Latin, papyri, ostraca, stone inscriptions, archaeological excavations and surveys especially at sites such as Berenike and Myos Hormos provide a wealth of data on historical development in the Red Sea region. Contributors to this volume are drawn from a variety of disciplines such as philology, Egyptology, African studies, archaeology and ancient history and base their papers on recent discoveries as well as re-interpretation of textual sources. Many of these papers first appeared in issues of the French journal Topoi but on account of their importance to maritime history of the Indian Ocean it was decided to publish them for a wider audience. Esarhaddon, King of Assyria
Esarhaddon, King of Assyria continues Josette Elayi's narrative journey through the lives of the kings of the Neo-Assyrian Empire. Using both archaeological and textual evidence, Elayi examines the contentious circumstances surrounding Esarhaddon's accession to the throne in 681 BCE, his rebuilding of Babylon, which had been destroyed by his father Sennacherib, his successful campaigns in Media, the Arabian Peninsula, Anatolia, the Caucasus, and the Levant, and his ultimate achievement, the conquest of Egypt in 671 BCE. Throughout, Elayi presents a rich portrait of this enigmatic figure, whose short but impactful reign was plagued by chronic illness and a complex--and ultimately fatal--relationship with his court officials. Yet, through it all, Esarhaddon emerges as one of the most scholarly and most politically successful kings of the empire.
Mahasthan Record Revisited
A small record consisting of six to seven lines that has been published by eminent epigraphists several times, would require a fresh interpretation was almost beyond imagination. It was by chance that the Indian Museum displayed the Mahasthan stone plaque, and after seeing this record, several questions arose which demanded a fresh interpretation, and this enquiry finally culminated into this slim monograph. The book attempts a re-reading of this inscription and also provides a fresh interpretation. It tries to situate this record in a broader canvas by interrogating the record along with several other evidences. This finally leads us to look at the Mauryan Empire from a regional perspective.
