While learning about ways to bring some fun into the lives of those who are long-term confined to home or hospital, the reader discovers that the book is really about hope, dignity, and love. The underlying theme throughout is that while providing support for your loved one whose health is inescapably diminishing, you must not lose sight of the fact that the patient desperately needs to feel loved, to be considered a whole individual who happens to be sick, and to maintain a sense of still being in control. Methods are discussed for steps that need to be taken as the end of life nears for some. Maintenance of the caregivers health is discussed as well as methods to avoid burnout. The Appendix contains a long list of potential websites for both the caregiver and receiver. Its not a long bookalong the way you will find its a story of the relationship of a sick young woman with those who loved her and wanted to make her shortened life one that was full, filled with love, hope, and meaning. It wont take you long to read the book, but you will feel enriched at its conclusion.

From Warm Center to Ragged Edge

During the half-century after the Civil War, intellectuals and politicians assumed the Midwest to be the font and heart of American culture. Despite the persistence of strong currents of midwestern regionalism during the 1920s and 1930s, the region went into eclipse during the post–World War II era. In the apt language of Minnesota’s F. Scott Fitzgerald, the Midwest slid from being the “warm center” of the republic to its “ragged edge.” This book explains the factors that triggered the demise of the Midwest’s regionalist energies, from anti-midwestern machinations in the literary world and the inability of midwestern writers to break through the cultural politics of the era to the growing dominance of a coastal, urban culture. These developments paved the way for the proliferation of images of the Midwest as flyover country, the Rust Belt, a staid and decaying region. Yet Lauck urges readers to recognize persisting and evolving forms of midwestern identity and to resist the forces that squelch the nation’s interior voices.

Singlewomen in the European Past, 1250-1800

When we think about the European past, we tend to imagine villages, towns, and cities populated by conventional families—married couples and their children. Although most people did marry and pass many of their adult years in the company of a spouse, this vision of a preindustrial Europe shaped by heterosexual marriage deceptively hides the well-established fact that, in some times and places, as many as twenty-five percent of women and men remained single throughout their lives. Despite the significant number of never-married lay women in medieval and early modern Europe, the study of their role and position in that society has been largely neglected. Singlewomen in the European Past open...

From Jacobite to Conservative

What would it mean to be 'conservative' in Britain before such terminology was even used? What is the relationship between the Jacobitism or Toryism of the early eighteenth century and the ideology of loyalist Englishmen of the latter Georgian period. This 1993 book confronts these questions in discussing an evolving right-wing mentalité.
