Unjustly thrown into prison, after two years Nescar manages to escape only to find Tindal has taken Roscanna, who thinks him dead. Forced to board a trading vessel, Nescar sails to Egypt where he encounters the plotters who had put him in jail. In an ambush Nescar displays his fighting ability and joins the Pharaoh's guard where he is instrumental in foiling a plot to place an unrecognised Pharaoh on the throne. Nescar finds Kumani abandoned in the desert and falls in love. They sail to Harappa in India where he helps to repel an attack from the nomadic Aryan army. On the way to Assur in Assyria Kumani is murdered and Nescar moves on with a heavy heart. He returns to his home town that soon finds itself under attack.
