A Transatlantic Political Theology of Psychedelic Aesthetics

Arguing that we ought to look to psychedelic aesthetics of the 1960s in relation to current crises in liberal democracy, this book emphasizes the intersection of European thought and the psychedelic. The first half of the book focuses on philosophical influences of Herbert Marcuse and Antonin Artaud, while the second half shifts toward literary and theoretical influences of Aldous Huxley on psychedelic aesthetics. Framed within an emergent discourse of political theology, it suggests that taking a postsecular approach to psychedelic aesthetics helps us understand deeper connections between aesthetics and politics.

Their average age was twenty-five. They came from Berkeley, Cambridge, Paris, London and Chicago - and arrived in New Mexico ready for adventure or at least resigned to it. But hope quickly turned to hardship in the desolate military town where everything was a secret, including what their husbands were doing at the lab. They lived in barely finished houses with a P.O. Box for an address, in a town wreathed with barbed wire, all for the benefit of 'the project' that didn't exist as far as the greater world was concerned. They were constrained by the words they couldn't say out loud, the letters they couldn't send home, the freedom they didn't have. Though they were strangers, they joined together - babies were born, friendships were forged, children grew up. But then 'the project' was unleashed and even bigger challenges faced the women of Los Alamos, as they struggled with the burden of their contribution towards the creation of the most destructive force in mankind's history - the atomic bomb. Contentious, gripping and intimate, The Wives of Los Alamos is a personal tale of one of the most momentous events in our history.

Poems about pop culture, mortality, and the internet, written during the Coronavirus pandemic—for readers who are more likely to double-tap Instapoems than put their phone down long enough to read The Decameron. Catalyzed by sheltering in place and by a personal challenge to give up alcohol for thirty days, Leigh Stein, the poet laureate of The Bachelor, has written a twenty-first-century Decameron to frame modern fables. What to Miss When makes mischief of reality TV and wellness influencers, juicy thoughtcrimes and love languages, and the mixed messages of contemporary feminism. “Think Starlight,” the first poem in this collection, written before any self-quarantine orders, imagined ...

These brief prose poems function as "meditations in an emergence," though what is coming forth-which is existence, being, all of it-remains ever unfixed, out of reach. The result is not disorientation but a kind of tenderness for the fragmented though often beautiful attempts at knowing, "the way words unvelop on the page." These poems feel right for our time. They evoke the uncertainty and enormity that seems to dwarf us, and the hope that humans are "something other than lost." -Allison Cobb, author of Plastic: An Autobiography These prose poems hopscotch and hover above a playground of swerving soundscapes like flash floods of murmurations over windswept wheat. "Ablaze in a barnstorm." "A television in reverse." "Agogged." Morse's discrete instants of disjunctive astonishment welcome us as friends with these mercurial passages through the whir of words. "Dear slipstream, I'll call you come what may." Dive into the current of onomatopoetic anomalies and you will swim with dolphins cresting, "dreamt afoot. Or afloat." -W. Scott Howard, editor of Denver Quarterly
