New Directions in Mathematical Fluid Mechanics

On November 3, 2005, Alexander Vasil’evich Kazhikhov left this world, untimely and unexpectedly. He was one of the most in?uential mathematicians in the mechanics of ?uids, and will be remembered for his outstanding results that had, and still have, a c- siderablysigni?cantin?uenceinthe?eld.Amonghis manyachievements, werecall that he was the founder of the modern mathematical theory of the Navier-Stokes equations describing one- and two-dimensional motions of a viscous, compressible and heat-conducting gas. A brief account of Professor Kazhikhov’s contributions to science is provided in the following article “Scienti?c portrait of Alexander Vasil’evich Kazhikhov”. This volume is mea...

This volume consists of four contributions that are based on a series of lectures delivered by Jens Frehse. Konstantin Pikeckas, K.R. Rajagopal and Wolf von Wahl t the Fourth Winter School in Mathematical Theory in Fluid Mechanics, held in Paseky, Czech Republic, from December 3-9, 1995. In these papers the authors present the latest research and updated surveys of relevant topics in the various areas of theoretical fluid mechanics. Specifically, Frehse and Ruzicka study the question of the existence of a regular solution to Navier-Stokes equations in five dimensions by means of weighted estimates. Pileckas surveys recent results regarding the solvability of the Stokes and Navier-Stokes syst...

Regularity Results for Nonlinear Elliptic Systems and Applications

This book collects many helpful techniques for obtaining regularity results for solutions of nonlinear systems of partial differential equations. These are applied in various cases to provide useful examples and relevant results, particularly in such fields as fluid mechanics, solid mechanics, semiconductor theory and game theory.

Mean Field Games and Mean Field Type Control Theory

Mean field games and Mean field type control introduce new problems in Control Theory. The terminology “games” may be confusing. In fact they are control problems, in the sense that one is interested in a single decision maker, whom we can call the representative agent. However, these problems are not standard, since both the evolution of the state and the objective functional is influenced but terms which are not directly related to the state or the control of the decision maker. They are however, indirectly related to him, in the sense that they model a very large community of agents similar to the representative agent. All the agents behave similarly and impact the representative agent. However, because of the large number an aggregation effect takes place. The interesting consequence is that the impact of the community can be modeled by a mean field term, but when this is done, the problem is reduced to a control problem.

Weakly Differentiable Functions

The term "weakly differentiable functions" in the title refers to those inte n grable functions defined on an open subset of R whose partial derivatives in the sense of distributions are either LP functions or (signed) measures with finite total variation. The former class of functions comprises what is now known as Sobolev spaces, though its origin, traceable to the early 1900s, predates the contributions by Sobolev. Both classes of functions, Sobolev spaces and the space of functions of bounded variation (BV func tions), have undergone considerable development during the past 20 years. From this development a rather complete theory has emerged and thus has provided the main impetus for the...

Nonlinear Problems in Mathematical Physics and Related Topics

The main topics in this volume reflect the fields of mathematics in which Professor O.A. Ladyzhenskaya obtained her most influential results. One of the main topics considered is the set of Navier-Stokes equations and their solutions.
