Pharmaceutical Preformulation

FROM THE PREFACE This book addresses problems and solutions of formulation and preformulation with which I have concerned myself for 34 years. When I was employed in the pharmaceutical industry I worked at functions, in the 1960's, which were the precursors of preformulation, and my early publications dealt with such matters. In the following decades advances have been made in methodology and the realm of preformulation has grown. Theory and the way in which problems are viewed have also undergone change. The text deals with the pharmaceutical aspects of preformulation, not the synthetic nor the analytical aspects. It takes its vantage point at the point in time when the pharmaceutical preformulator first obtains a sample of the drug substance, and it explores the physical, chemical and technological aspects that are needed for a full exploration of the potential advantages and disadvantages of the drug substance. It is only through the understanding of underlying principles that adequate exploration can be carried out.

This comprehensive guide presents the principles underlying the formation, properties and manufacturing of solid dosage forms. Developed by a leading pharmaceutical expert with 25 years of experience, this book is a precise handbook to powder dosage forms, hard shell capsules, milling, tablet, granulation and drying, stability, crystalline solids, DSC and amorphates, hygroscopicity, packaging, micromeritics, sustained release, and more. Designed for use by development pharmacists, analytical chemists, production pharmacists, and pharmacy professors and students, this book emphasizes U.S. validation principles; the interrelationship between formulation, manufacturing and existing USP and FDA guidelines; and aspects of pharmaceutics important to IND and NDA submission and subsequent supplements.

Addressing concerns for patient welfare while protecting producer reputation, and providing a database for formulation of other products, this multiauthored reference blends fundamental theory and practical advice on drug product stability in scientific, technical, and regulatory environments, covering development of indicating assays, computer use, clinical trial materials, strategic planning, and packaging. Describing the documentation required to minimize the changes of regulatory citations, the book lists manufacturers of photostability testing chambers, stability system software, and laboratory information management systems for pharmaceutical applications.

Sapeurs

British photographer Tariq Zaidi presents a fashion subculture of Kinshasa & Brazzaville: La Sape, Societe des Ambianceurs et des Personnes Elegantes. Its followers are known as 'Sapeurs' ('Sapeuses' for women). Most have ordinary day jobs as taxi-drivers, tailors and gardeners, but as soon as they clock off they transform themselves into debonair dandies. Sashaying through the streets they are treated like rock stars - turning heads, bringing 'joie de vivre' to their communities and defying their circumstances.
