Provides an examination of the relationship between the core capitalist countries and the rest of the world in the age of neoliberal globalization. Deploying a Marxist methodology, Smith begins by tracing the production of certain iconic commodities--the T-shirt, the cup of coffee, and the iPhone--and demonstrates how these generate enormous outflows of money from the countries of the Global South to transnational corporations headquartered in the core capitalist nations of the Global North. From there, Smith draws on his empirical findings to theorize the current shape of imperialism. He argues that the core capitalist countries need no longer rely on military force and colonialism (although these still occur) but increasingly are able to extract profits from workers in the Global South through market mechanisms and, by aggressively favoring places with lower wages, the phenomenon of labor arbitrage. --From publisher description.

The origins of the world, do we really know them? The rebellion of Satan, a theme that has given rise to a large number of legends, books and fables over the centuries. Preconceptions about how evil started and if anyone is running it are present in every self-respecting ancient story. How did the man appear? In addition to providing new insights in this regard, Project Magen, by the hand of this researcher, will focus its attention in this case on the figure of said shadowy character and the roots of knowledge about the appearance of man, both by reviewing the narratives that are have hovered around these aspects as in the information that we have been able to obtain and document, in order ...

A comprehensive blueprint for a new post-capitalist order—which values our collective future over immediate economic gains The fate of all economic systems is written in the energy flows they obtain from the natural world. Our collective humanity very much depends on nature—for joy, for comfort, and for sheer survival. In his prescient new book, The Physics of Capitalism, Erald Kolasi explores the deep ecological physics of human existence by developing a new theoretical framework for understanding the relationship between economic systems and the wider natural world. Nature is full of complex and dynamic systems that are constantly interacting with our societies. The collective physical...

Inspired to write a short story every month of the year, Michael Ruiz imagines a wide variety of fiction filled with romance, ambiguity, and humor: a first date; a text message taken literally; the story you tell the kids (and the story that really happened); a daily attempt to ask a girl out; a pirate captain and his wife catching a ghost captain; an engaged couple dealing with their family - in space; the perfect couple that will never know; a young boy handling a situation without mom and dad; a bank heist that goes terribly wrong; a young girl's concept of love; a neighbor's personal code; a series of emails; and a hero who must stop a master to restore order to the Ninja. The 2014 Short Story Collection includes thirteen short stories and twelve sessions from the series, "One Hour to Live."

The Patchwork City

In contemporary Manila, slums and squatter settlements are peppered throughout the city, often pushing right up against the walled enclaves of the privileged, creating the complex geopolitical pattern of Marco Z. Garrido’s “patchwork city.” Garrido documents the fragmentation of Manila into a mélange of spaces defined by class, particularly slums and upper- and middle-class enclaves. He then looks beyond urban fragmentation to delineate its effects on class relations and politics, arguing that the proliferation of these slums and enclaves and their subsequent proximity have intensified class relations. For enclave residents, the proximity of slums is a source of insecurity, compelling...
