Urban Poverty and Violence in Jamaica

This report conducts a comprehensive analysis of India's stabilization and reform program over the past five years, describing a successful transition from central planning to a more open and deregulated economy. In addition to the progress the country has made, the report cites challenges to future growth and points to areas of priority action, such as improving urban services and investing in human capital. The report addresses specific topics, including (i) fiscal consolidation and debt dynamics; (ii) public expenditure and tax reforms; (iii) money and bond markets; (iv) contractual savings institutions; (v) agricultural trade liberalization and rural development; (vi) investing in private infrastructure; and (vii) the external environment and India's export competitiveness.

Women are encouraged to believe that they can occupy top jobs in society by the example of other women thriving in their careers. Who better to be a role model for career success than your mother? Paradoxically, this book shows that having a mother as a role model, even for graduates of top universities, does not predict daughters progressing in their own careers. It finds that mothers with careers, whilst highly influential in their daughters’ choice of career path, rarely mentor their daughters as they progress. This is partly explained by ‘quiet ambition’ – the tendency of women to be modest about their achievements. Bigger issues are the twin pressures from contemporary motherhood and workplace culture that ironically lead career women’s daughters to believe that being a ‘good mother’ means working part-time. This stalls career progress. Based on a large, cross-generational qualitative sample, this book offers a timely and original perspective on the debate about gender equality in leadership positions.

Decentralization of Education

Central governments' supply-side expansions of schooling have not equally benefited all members of society, especially girls, indigenous peoples, tribal groups, disadvantaged minorities, and the poor. Public spending on education is often inefficient, higher education is subsidized at primary education's expense, and costs are becoming insupportable. To tackle such issues, some governments are exploring demand-side financing, whereby public funds are given directly to individuals or institutions on the basis of expressed demand. Use of decentralized, demand-side financing mechanisms (like vouchers and stipends) is common in member countries of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and De...
