In this issue we wanted to commemorate the 80th anniversary of both the German invasion of Poland and the Soviet invasion of Finland, two events that marked the beginning of World War II. In fact, analyzing the contents of this new issue, we initially find an article on the use of Totenkopf units in Poland in September 1939, a second article on the Soviet invasion of Finland. Then we find the biography of Karl Heinz-Boska by Peter Mooney, the history of the Italian smoke generating units on the Baltic, the use of the SS units during the battle of Kursk in July 1943, the first part of a long and detailed article on the biographies of the Krüger brothers and finally an article dedicated to the Close Combat Clasp.

Rethinking China in the 1950s
The articles in this issue deal with various aspects of the on-going re-evaluation and reconsideration of the far-reaching political, economic and ideological transformation of China in the 1950s, exploring the broader themes in various subfields and from different perspectives. There is a special focus on specific developments in the early 1950s: on land reform and the significance of this for the political consolidation of the new People's Republic, on state violence and mass crimes; on the state discourse on housewives and housework; on the establishment of Chinese as a foreign language at Peking University from the perspective of an eye-witness. Two studies deal with developments in the field of historiography: the first analyses the discussions of Chinese intellectuals in the late 1950s who were seeking to establish historical legitimacy; the second highlights recent debates among historians and intellectuals who have been creating new master narratives and have been involved, in pluralistic terms, in newly constructing the history of the 1950s, especially with regard to the Great Leap Forward and the 1957 Anti-Rightist Movement.
Frieden im Ostseeraum
Ausgehend vom 650. Jahrestag des Stralsunder Friedens von 1370 nimmt der Sammelband weitere Friedensschlüsse im Ostseeraum bis in das 20. Jahrhundert hinein in den Blick. Dazu gehören der Perleberger Frieden von 1420, der Stettiner Frieden von 1570, die Friedensschlüsse am Ende des Großen Nordischen Krieges 1720 oder auch der dänisch-deutsche Grenzvertrag von 1920. Er geht der Frage nach, was Frieden zum jeweiligen Zeitpunkt für die Vertragschließenden bedeutete. Im zweiten Teil des Bandes geht es um das Kriegsende 1945 aus der Sicht der Ostseeanrainer.
