Bibliographie Linguistique/ Linguistic Bibliography is the annual bibliography of linguistics published by the Permanent International Committee of Linguists under the auspices of the International Council of Philosophy and Humanistic Studies of UNESCO. With a tradition of more than fifty years (the first two volumes, covering the years 1939-1947, were published in 1949-1950), Bibliographie Linguistique is by far the most comprehensive bibliography in the field. It covers all branches of linguistics, both theoretical and descriptive, from all geographical areas, including less known and extinct languages, with particular attention to the many endangered languages of the world. Living with Languages
In 2002, Expo. 02 - the Swiss National Exhibition - celebrated the modern identity of the Swiss Confederation and the electorate approved a historic change in relations with other countries by voting to join the United Nations. Yet, despite bilateral agreements regulating areas of common interest between Switzerland and the European Union, there are still strong fears that Swiss identity could be jeopardised by full membership, and that, within a wider framework, her quadrilingual composition could not be sustained. The experience which the Swiss have accumulated in dealing pragmatically and largely peacefully with different languages is detailed in the six essays of this volume. The special contemporary characteristics of German, French and Italian within Switzerland, the pressures on Romansh, the role played by Switzerland in integrating gender-neutral language into standard usage and the dominance of English as a means of communication between different language groups are amongst the topics discussed.

Setting out the historical national and religious characteristics of the Italians as they impact on the integration within the European Union, this study makes note of the two characteristics that have an adverse effect on Italian national identity: cleavages between north and south and the dominant role of family. It discusses how for Italians family loyalty is stronger than any other allegiance, including feelings towards their country, their nation, or the EU. Due to such subnational allegiances and values, this book notes that Italian civic society is weaker and engagement at the grass roots is less robust than one finds in other democracies, leaving politics in Italy largely in the hands of political parties. The work concludes by noting that EU membership, however, provides no magic bullet for Italy: it cannot change internal cleavages, the Italian worldview, and family values or the country’s mafia-dominated power matrix, and as a result, the underlying absence of fidelity to a shared polity—Italian or European—leave the country as ungovernable as ever.
New Approaches to Old Problems
This volume contains revised versions of thirteen of the papers presented at the parasession, “New Solutions to Old Problems: Issues in Romance Historical Linguistics”, held as part of the 29th Linguistic Symposium on the Romance Languages (1999). These studies examine specific problems in Romance historical linguistics within the framework of new analytical approaches, many of which represent extensions into the diachronic realm of methodologies and theories originally formulated to explain aspects of synchronic phonology and syntax. Insights afforded by Principles and Parameters, the Minimalist Program, Optimality Theory, grammaticalization theory, and sociohistorical linguistics are used to elucidate such long-standing issues in traditional historical grammar as diphthongization in Hispano-Romance, syncope of intertonic vowels in Hispano- and Gallo-Romane, Romance lenition, the role of analogy in morphological change, word order, infinitival constructions, and the collocation of clitic object pronouns in Old French and Old Spanish.

Geschichte des Faches Romanistik. Methodologie (Das Sprachsystem)
Nach der Publikation der Bände zum Verhältnis von Latein und Romanisch und zur historisch-vergleichenden Grammatik der romanischen Sprachen (Bd. II/1), zu den einzelnen romanischen Sprachen und Sprachgebieten vom Mittelalter bis zur Renaissance (Bd. II,2) und von der Renaissance bis zur Gegenwart (Bde. III, IV, V/1, V/2, VI/1, VI/2) sowie zu den Themen Kontakt, Migration und Kunstsprachen sowie Kontrastivität, Klassifikation und Typologie (Bd. VII) wird nun Band I des seit 1988 erscheinenden »LRL« in zwei Teilbänden zur Geschichte und Methodologie des Faches Romanistik vorgelegt. Der erste Halbband (Artikel 1-38) befaßt sich mit der Geschichte des Faches Romanistik und der Methodologie (»Das Sprachsystem«), der zweite Halbband (Artikel 39-90) mit den methodologischen Bereichen »Sprache in der Gesellschaft«, »Sprache und Klassifikation«, »Datensammlung und -verarbeitung«. Das Gesamtwerk wird in den kommenden Jahren mit den Indices und dem Literaturverzeichnis (Bd. VIII) abgeschlossen werden.
