In the Shadow a Shadow

One of the most continuously influential figures of the past half century, Joan Jonas (*1936) was among the first artists to embrace the forms of video, performance and installation. This extensively illustrated and authoritative book, containing hundreds of full-color images, presents the definitive collection of Jonas' work. The first career-spanning monograph of the multimedia pioneer, it covers more than 40 years of performances, films, videos, installations, texts and video sculptures. In addition to documentation of the artist's crucial projects, In the Shadow a Shadow includes individual essays by Douglas Crimp, Barbara Clausen and Johanna Burton, a major survey text by Joan Simon, texts by Joan Jonas about several of her seminal works, as well as unpublished photographs and drawings from Jonas' archives.

Joan

Volumes have been written by and about Patrick Leigh Fermor, but his wife Joan is almost entirely absent from their pages. Now, Simon Fenwick, archivist of the Leigh Fermor papers, tells Joan's story in Joan: The Remarkable Life of Joan Leigh Fermor. A talented photographer, Joan defied the social conventions of her times and, though she came from a wealthy and well-connected family, earned her own living. Through her lover, and later editor of the TLS, Alan Pryce-Jones, she met and mingled with the leading lights of 1930s bohemia – John Betjeman, Cyril Connolly, Evelyn Waugh, Maurice Bowra (who adored her) and Osbert Lancaster, among others. She featured regularly in the gossip columns, n...

Education and Society in Tudor England

This book discusses educational developments during a crucial period of English history in their social context, revising a long-standing interpretation of the effect of Reformation legislation. Tracing trends from the fifteenth to the seventeenth century, it is in three parts. The first considers the pattern in the later maiddle ages and the conditions favouring the spread of humanist ideas which were to be adapted and applied at the Reformation. In Part II there is a detailed survey of measures takeen under Henry VIII and during the reign of Edward VI when state intervention to control the organisation and curriculum of schools and universities laid the foundations of the modern system of education. Finally, after a review of the relation between educational and social change, the focus is on three main aspects during the conservative Elizabethan age: consolidation of the school system, the pattern devised for the institution of the gentleman; the extension of the popular education fostered by the puritan ethic and the pressure of practical needs - forecasting the next major move for educational reform in the mid-seventeenth century.

Edmund de Waal’s art speaks to his enduring fascination with the nature of objects and the attendant history of their collection and display. Confronting European and Asian traditions of intimate craftsmanship with the scale and sequence of minimalist art and music, Edmund de Waal’s ensembles of porcelain vessels evoke at once the delicate measure of Agnes Martin’s sublime abstract paintings and the rhythmic pulses of the music of Philip Glass and Steve Reich.

A critical primer on the work of artist Eva Hesse. Eva Hesse's distinctive process-based art exerted a powerful influence on minimalist artists of the 1960s and continues to inspire artists today. Using industrial materials such as latex and fiberglass, she exploited their flexibility to produce works with an unsettling psychic and corporeal resonance. Hesse, who was born in Germany in 1936 and raised in New York City, died of cancer in New York in 1970. Eva Hesse focuses on the body of criticism that has developed since the last major retrospective of Hesse's work, at the Yale University Art Gallery in 1992. The book's publication coincides with a major exhibition organized jointly by the San Francisco Museum of Art and the Wiesbaden Museum. Eva Hesse contains a 1970 interview by Cindy Nemser, a discussion between Mel Bochner and Joan Simon, and essays by Briony Fer, Rosalind Krauss, Mignon Nixon, and Anne M. Wagner.

This is the first full-length study of the life and career of Brian Simon (1915-2002), leading Marxist intellectual and historian of education in twentieth-century Britain. Using documentary sources that have only recently become publicly available, it reveals the remarkably broad range of Simon’s life as student, soldier and school teacher, Communist Party activist, and educational academic, campaigner and reformer. In a sympathetic biography that yet retains critical distance, the authors analyse Simon’s contribution to Marxism and the CP, explore the influence of both on his work as a historian of education and trace the significance of his Marxist beliefs, political associations and ...
