João França nasceu na Rua do Carmo, no Funchal, a 23 de Junho de 1908, sendo filho de Belchior de França e de Maria José Pacheco de França. Demonstrando uma natural propensão para o jornalismo, desde cedo começou a colaborar nos jornais madeirenses. Em 1938 radicou-se em Lisboa, tendo trabalhado como redactor jornalístico n'A Noite, no Jornal da Tarde e, desde 1944, n'O Século, tendo cimentado neste último os seus créditos como reputado repórter internacional.Faleceu em Lisboa a 28 de Janeiro de 1996, legando para a posteridade uma rica obra literária que se espraia por diferentes géneros, indo do romance ao conto, à poesia, à crónica e ao teatro.As suas facetas de jornalista, romancista, poeta e cronista eram as mais conhecidas até aqui. Nesta obra, editada vinte anos após a morte deste prolífico escritor madeirense, revela-se, com maior ênfase, o seu perfil de consagrado dramaturgo, ao apresentarmos aos leitores 14 peças de teatro da sua autoria, 10 das quais mantinham-se inéditas até ao presente.

Taboo in Advertising
Taboos are much more than just a synonym of 'forbidden'. Proof of the concept's complexity can be found in the way ads often try to hide the taboo inherent to their products or, conversely, in the way certain taboo readings are foregrounded on purpose in other ads. This volume shows why and how that happens, using print and television ads to exemplify (a) the elaborate strategies used by ads for certain products to cleverly hide the taboo inherent to them, and (b) the deliberate recourse to taboo references in ads for products that do not present any taboo connotation. Accountability for International Humanitarian Law Violations: The Case of Rwanda and East Timor
The book is a critical review of accountability conducted under the authority of the United Nations Security Council, by the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR), and the United Nations Transitional Administration in East Timor (UNTAET). It is centred on two case studies: the 1999 events in Rwanda, and the 1999 mayhem in East Timor.
