Ha evolucionat amb el temps de manera paral·lela al concepte de diccionari, però no és fins als darrers decennis que s'ha produït una reflexió profunda sobre els seus objectius i sobre els seus mètodes, fins al punt que podem parlar d'una veritable revolució en aquest camp. L'extraordinari desenvolupament de les tècniques informàtiques ha tingut una repercussió notable en la renovació metodològica: la utilització dels ordinadors i de les grans bases de dades permet el tractament adequat i sistemàtic de l'enorme quantitat d'informació que entra en joc a l'hora d'elaborar un diccionari.
