This work by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749-1832) was translated into English in 1840 by Sir Charles Eastlake (1793-1865), painter and later keeper of the National Gallery. Goethe's 1810 work was rejected by many contemporary scientists because it appeared to contradict the physical laws laid down by Newton. However, its focus on the human perception of the colour spectrum, as opposed to the observable optical phenomenon, was attractive to, and influential upon, artists and philosophers. As Eastlake says in his preface, the work's dismissal on scientific grounds had caused 'a well-arranged mass of observations and experiments, many of which are important and interesting', to be overlooked. Eastlake also puts Goethe's work into its aesthetic and scientific context and describes its original reception. His clear translation of Goethe's observations and experiments on colour and light will appeal to anyone interested in our responses to art.

The Flight to Italy

This is the authentic day-to-day record of the first eight weeks of freedom experienced by Germany's greatest poet as he headed for the Italy he had longed to see since childhood and there found himself in a wholly new world of warmth and light. Leaving behind the difficulties of a decade in Weimar, the burden of administration, a troubled love affair, and the frustration of not having time to work on his writings, he discovers himself all over again in Italty--as a sensuous being and as an artist. Goethe's fresh, spontaneous notes, sometimes dashed down at crowded tables in primitive Italian inns, unite art and nature; Antiquity and the Renaissance; aesthetics and science; and observations on climate, rocks, plants, and the Italian people in an extemporaneous and telling mixture through which we observe the poet's mature vision of both the natural and human worlds taking form. Never before rendered in English, this rich diary reveals a great European writer at an impressionable turning-point in his life.

Trilogy of Passion

Trilogy of Passions is a poetry collection by the German author Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. His body of work includes epic and lyric poetry written in a variety of metres and styles; prose and verse dramas; memoirs; an autobiography; literary and aesthetic criticism; treatises on botany, anatomy, and colour; and four novels. In addition, numerous literary and scientific fragments, more than 10,000 letters, and nearly 3,000 drawings by him are extant. A literary celebrity by the age of 25, Goethe was ennobled by the Duke of Saxe-Weimar, Karl August in 1782 after first taking up residence there in November 1775 following the success of his first novel, The Sorrows of Young Werther. He was an e...

Blessed Longing

Not a mere compilation, Blessed Longing traces the development of Goethe's lyric poetry as an organic-dynamic unity, through numerous representative samples of both well known and more intimate occasional poems. The translations are in verse and reflect as accurately as possible the rich diversity of Goethe's own meter, while dispensing with the restrictive artifice of rhyme to avoid the occasional "stuffiness" of traditional translations. The goal was not only to make Goethe's individual achievements accessible to English speakers, but to present to them a full and varied picture of Goethe the man and the poet.
