Field Studies
The fifteen essays in this volume reflect the diversity of German studies in Britain and Ireland today. The German language itself is the focus of four studies, covering historical aspects of German and Yiddish, language pedagogy and controversial contemporary issues, such as the rise of Anglicisms in German and the language of second- and third-generation immigrants. Traditional literary philology is also well represented in six essays on prose writers and dramatists from the nineteenth century to the present day, but it is a traditional philology that has been much modified and enriched by the cultural and historical perspectives evident in the remaining five essays. These include psychoanalytical and contextual studies and embrace the historical development and elaboration of mass media technologies from radio to public-access cable TV.
War Isn't Hell, It's Entertainment
Real war is a cruel theater of death, yet it is also an exciting narrative exploited for national, political and commercial purposes and turned into numerous films, television shows, computer games, news stories and reenactment plays. Gender Equality and the Media
This edited collection draws on and expands the findings from a pan-European research project undertaken during 2012-13 which was funded by the European Institute for Gender Equality and aimed to explore three key issues in relation to gender and media: women’s inclusion in decision-making positions within media industries; how women are represented in the media; and what policies and mechanisms are in place to support women’s career development and promote gender equality. Kant’s Theory of Value
In explicit form, Kant does not speak that much about values or goods. The reason for this is obvious: the concepts of ‘values’ and ‘goods’ are part of the eudaimonistic tradition, and he famously criticizes eudaimonism for its flawed ‘material’ approach to ethics. But he uses, on several occasions, the traditional teleological language of goods and values. Especially in the Groundwork and the Critique of Practical Reason, Kant develops crucial points on this conceptual basis. Furthermore, he implicitly discusses issues of conditional and unconditional values, subjective and objective values, aesthetic or economic values etc. In recent Kant scholarship, there has been a controversy on the question how moral and nonmoral values are related in Kant’s account of human dignity. This leads to the more fundamental problem if Kant should be seen as a prescriptvist (antirealist) or as subscribing to a more objective rational agency account of goods. This issue and several further questions are addressed in this volume.
Mapping Foreign Correspondence in Europe
The book studies the current trends of foreign correspondence in Europe. The EU’s expansion has had abundant effects on news coverage and some of the European capitals have become home to the biggest international press corps in world. So, who are these "professional strangers" stationed in Europe and how do they try to make their stories, that are clearly important in today’s interconnected world, interesting for viewers and readers? Love against all Reason
In her teens, Helene Krulich fell in love with a young Kurdish student in Prague and married him. This is how she became involved in the Kurds' fight for their basic rights in Kurdish leader Abdol Rahman Ghassemlou's native country Iran while living in Czechoslovakia. Mostly living clandestinely, she passed through Iraq and Syria with members of the respective Kurdish freedom-fighters. She became a contemporary witness of history in her own native country, Czechoslovakia, from the Soviet occupation to its EU-membership. She faced Ghassemlou's assassination upon state order by Iranian "peace-negotiators" in Vienna in 1989. She fought for an investigation of the crime by Austria's police and legal institutions in vain. This memoir as a very personal "history from below" of her time fighting for Kurdish freedom.
