Across Europe, there is an intense search for new and sustainable approaches to providing welfare. Demographic change, new social risks and other factors call for new ideas to maintain and enhance the performance and quality of social services and to enable the participation of all citizens in an inclusive society. Poverty and exclusion are rising challenges in all European countries. Christian welfare organisations such as Diaconia have been committed to working against poverty and marginalisation since many years. However, a change of the structures which cause poverty is often not accomplished. Poor people remain in dependent situations and do not really participate in society. What are the main challenges to diaconal institutions combating poverty and exclusion? Which innovations are necessary within diaconia and civil society in order to meet future challenges? With contributions from all over Europe, this volume tries to answer these questions by applying a multi-perspective angle to the main challenges, by examing new concepts and by developing new perspectives for the future of Christian social practice.

Human Rights and Disability
The formerly established medically-based idea of disability, with its charity-based approach to treatment and services, is being replaced by a human rights-based approach in which people with impairments are no longer considered medical problems, totally dependent on the beneficence of non-impaired people in society, but have fundamental rights to support, inclusion, and participation. This interdisciplinary book examines the diverse concerns that people with impairments face in the context of human rights, provides insights into new developments on important issues relating human rights to disability, and features new approaches and solutions to vital problems in the current debate.
Ritual Servitudes and Christian Social Practices in Ghana
This book explores the kinds of Christian service or diaconia that develop in non-institutionalized practices for supporting survivors of indigenous ritual servitude or Trokosi in Africa. Drawing on empirical research from Ghana, it examines the possibilities of freedom, equality, and dignity for liberated Trokosi and the manner in which these women’s experiences constitute a repudiation of dominant patriarchal family systems. With close attention to the work of indigenous parachurches – which function outside of institutionalized churches – in challenging the contemporary practice of ritual slavery and offering its survivors a lived space in which they need not remain “hidden” as they seek restoration and integration into wider society, Ritual Servitudes and Christian Social Practices in Ghana will appeal to scholars of sociology, theology, and religion with interests in gender, contemporary ministries and African religion.

Als hybride Organisation finden sich konfessionelle Unternehmen der Sozialwirtschaft gleichzeitig mehreren unterschiedlichen Handlungslogiken gegenüber, die allesamt für deren Fortbestand notwendig sind. Sie sind gefordert, diese innerhalb der Organisation zu vermitteln sowie in ein Verhältnis zu ihrem Existenzgrund zu setzen, um diesen in der Praxis von normativem, strategischem und operativem Handeln zu verwirklichen. Im Kontext des Werkes wird Multirationalität deshalb als notwendige Bedingung für die Gestaltung des Organisationstypus illustriert und dieser unter Rekurs zu einer systemtheorethischen und neoinstitutionalistischen Organisationstheorie untersucht. Schwerpunkt ist neben einer theoriegeleiteten Deskription die Bezugnahme zu der normativen Dimension konfessioneller sozialwirtschaftlicher Unternehmen und deren Bedeutung als gestaltungsbestimmende Maximen.
Hoffnungsvoll und subversiv
Anders als in den biblischen Büchern spielt die "Freude" weder in der wissenschaftlichen Theologie der Gegenwart noch in der Kirche in der Regel eine zentrale Rolle; wird gar eher verdächtigt, Eskapismus und Jenseitsvertröstung zu fördern. Die vorliegende Theologie der Freude versucht dagegen, die subversive und hoffnungsgebende Kraft der Frohen Botschaft als Freude Gottes und Freude der Menschen (wieder) zu entdecken und angesichts der Herausforderungen und Krisen der Gegenwart und der Vergangenheit theologisch zu verantworten.
