Faith and Duty

'...there is no finer human being in public life than John Anderson' Prime Minister John Howard, October 10, 2004Australia's former Deputy Prime Minister John Anderson is the subject of a revealing and intimate portrait from Melbourne writer, Paul Gallagher. Faith and Duty charts the National Party leader's long-time political partnership with John Howard while revealing the pain and tragedies of a remarkable life. From the nightmare of his sister's accidental death to the loss of his infant son in the midst of political storms, Anderson's story is a uniquely candid account of personal triumph, family strength, unwavering integrity and faith and determination in the face of great loss.

Australian Realism

This book outlines the realist and pluralist philosophy of John Anderson, Australia's most original thinker, whose articles and teaching at Sydney University have deeply influenced Australian intellectual life. Several main themes run though his work, but Anderson never gave an overall account of his views. This is remedied here: in exhibiting the range of Anderson's thought, from logic, epistemology and theory of mind, to language and social theory, Baker's work sketches realism as a systematic philosophical position and shows something of the history of ideas in Australia. This book will be of particular interest to historians of modern philosophy and those studying realism.

Captain John Anderson served in the Dutch East India Company (VOC) as ‘Pilot-Major’ in a fleet of ships that set sail from Europe in December 1640, and returned with his ships in July 1643. This was Anderson’s fourth voyage to the East Indies. His journey took three years during which time he safely brought a VOC fleet to Java and home again through tempests and full-scale battles with the Portuguese at sea. In this, the first-ever edition of Anderson’s Journal, the editors have complemented his own words with chapters discussing the author’s contributions to the History of Warfare in Asia, Maritime Navigation and Early Modern Travel Writing.
