John Brougham Letters and Portrait
Letters to Brougham's friend Schönberg, dated 1871 January in pencil in a later hand, and letter to H.B. Napier, undated. In the first letter, Brougham complains of rheumatism, which has caused him to give up the idea of traveling to New York, and shares news of his theater's current engagement. He asks Schönberg to keep him informed of any developments, evidently referring to ongoing negotiations with Fisk and Company. In the second letter (on letterhead of the Lotus Club), Brougham describes the music of "Pocahontas" as simple, saying he is sending a marked copy of the score as it is now played, and "you will see that it is simplified very greatly." With the two letters is a portrait of Brougham, "engraved for French's American Drama."
