Grant's Dissector walks students step by step through dissection procedures in the anatomy lab. Each chapter is consistently organized, beginning with a brief study of surface anatomy followed by concise coverage of osteology, presenting important foundational structures that will aid in localization of soft tissue structures. Each unit begins with a "Dissection Overview," a guide to the procedures to be accomplished during the session. This is followed by "Dissection Instructions," with a logical sequence and numbered steps for the dissection. Each dissection concludes with a "Dissection Review" that presents a numbered list of tasks illustrating the important features of the dissection and encouraging the synthesis of information.
New edition of a standard textbook for use in courses in the health sciences.
This 11th edition has been reorganized to separate the clinical notes and details from the dissection instructions. A brief introduction precedes each structure's dissecting instructions, and blank observation boxes are provided for insertion of notes. Line drawings and radiographs are included.
Dr. J.C. Boileau Grant graduated from Edinburgh University in 1908. At the outbreak of war he volunteered for the Royal Army Medical Corps and served in the Grenadier Guards and the Black Watch. After demobilization in 1919 he accepted the invitation from the University of Manitoba to the Chair of Anatomy, which he occupied until 1930 when he went to Toronto as Professor of Anatomy. By then he had written his first textbook and had the first edition of the Atlas of Anatomy in progress, both of which brought him international recognition. The museum of anatomical specimens which he and his students had created in Toronto remains to this day a superb resource for the teaching of anatomy. He ended his academic career as Visiting Professor, UCLA, where the students voted him the Most Valuable Teacher award. Impeccable scholarship, quirky humour and, behind the mask of old-fashioned politeness and reserve, a warm friendliness ensure Grant's immortality in the annals of Canadian medicine.
A collection of color diagrams and line drawings representing human anatomical dissections. Also includes x-rays and photographs.
For many Canadians, the state of our health care and medical system is at the top of the public agenda. By following the growth and development of modern medicine in one Canadian province, Manitoba Medicine provides an insight into where our present medical system came from and how it developed. Beginning with a description of some early Aboriginal healing practices and of the physicians of the Red River Settlement, Manitoba Medicine follows the struggles in the 1870s to establish what would become the first medical college and the first major hospitals in Western Canada. It chronicles the fight for public health in the 1920s, the development of health insurance and medicare after WWII, and medicine's role in fighting the 1950 Winnipeg Flood and the polio epidemic of the late 1950s. Manitoba Medicine also provides vivid accounts of many of the individuals who built Manitoba's medical system, including early educators like Swale Vincent, pioneering women physicians such as Charlotte Ross, important researchers like Bruce Chown, and colourful private practitioners such as Murrough O'Brien.
