First Published in 1998.The purpose of this volume is to list as completely as possible Chávez’s compositions, which number close to two hundred works, and to present a digest of selected literature germane to his multi-faceted professional activity. This literature, which began in the 1920s and continues to grow, is almost entirely in Spanish and English, reflecting the main arenas in which he worked—Mexico, other Hispanic language countries, the United States, and England. Each research guide offers a selective, annotated list of writings, in all European languages, about one or more composers. There are also lists of works by the composer, unless these are available elsewhere. Biographical sketches and guides to library resources, organizations, and specialists are presented. As appropriate to the individual composer, there are maps, photographs, or other illustrative matter, glossaries, and indexes.

Before recovery comes the preparation to recover. In City of Slow Dissolve, John Chávez takes readers through this journey—the “slow dissolve,” the unpacking and re-packing of self that must take place before healing can begin. Fusing language poetry, lyric, and narrative, Chávez uses syntactical play, rhythm, and repetition of key words and lines to lend immediacy to emotions and actions. He tips words and images on their heads and invites readers to reexamine people and places that are at once familiar and utterly unfamiliar.

Final Words

In 1976 the Supreme Court of the United States affirmed the legality of capital punishment in their ruling on Gregg v. Georgia. In the forty-six years since the decision was handed down, 1,551 convicted prisoners have been executed. The United States is the only Western nation—and one of four advanced democracies—that regularly applies the death penalty. While the death penalty is legal in twenty-seven states, only twenty-one have the means to carry out death sentences. Of those states, Texas has executed the most prisoners in recent history, putting 578 people to death since the 1976 ruling, beginning with Charlie Brooks in 1982. Texas retains the third-largest death row population, beh...
