Dignity and Daily Practice
In recent debates over poverty and development, notions of worth, dignity, and human rights have come to the forefront. This publication addresses the link between the theoretical notion of dignity as a social primary good and its material expressions in daily life from comparative social anthropological and historical perspectives. The empirical analysis is based on over one hundred in-depth interviews with lone mothers living in different cultural settings in Costa Rica. In addition, a unique and innovative national social policy measure aimed at promoting dignity and self-worth as a means to exit poverty and secure sustainable development is assessed.
The Making of Heterosexualities
Drawing on an ethnographic study on young Moroccan immigrants in Europe (France and Italy), this book analyses the hegemonic power of heteronormativity and its plural expressions. It tries to give an answer to the following main questions: How the normative power of heterosexuality is socially constructed among men? How and why heterosexuality is interpreted as the socially “appropriate” norm to be recognised as a “true” man by other men? Attention is focused on those people who use heteronormativity in order to produce and reproduce heterosexual identifications through performing hegemonic masculinities. The objective is to deconstruct the “normality” of heterosexuality and the ways through which it is commonly used as a normative reference to talk about sexual life as well as to build masculinities, especially within homosocial relationships. Contextualization and the Old Testament
Christianity is often viewed in Asia as a Western imposition. Challenging this, Dr. Jerry Hwang examines the Old Testament’s cultural engagement of its ancient Near Eastern context, arguing that Scripture itself provides the ultimate model for contextualizing theology in Asia. A Pack of Lies
Defining lies as statements that are intended to deceive, this book considers the contexts in which people tell lies, how they are detected and sometimes exposed, and the consequences for the liars themselves, their dupes, and the wider society. The author provides examples from a number of cultures with distinctive religious and ethical traditions, and delineates domains where lying is the norm, domains that are ambiguous and the one domain (science) that requires truthtelling. He refers to experimental studies on children that show how, at an early age, they acquire the capactiy to lie and learn when it is appropriate to do so. He reviews how lying has been evaluated by moralists, examines why we do not regard novels as lies and relates the human capacity to lie to deceit among other animal species. He concludes that although there are, in all societies, good pragmatic reasons for not lying all the time, there are also strong reasons for lying some of the time.
