John Hanrahan Sr. married Mary O'Brien, and in 1847 the family immigrated from Ireland to New Brunswick, settling in Grey County, Ontario. John Hanrahan Jr. (1838-1903) married Mary Ann Lavina Florence Lauman in 1867, and immigrated to homestead in Pope County, Minnesota. Descendants lived in Minnesota, South Dakota, North Dakota, Illinois, Oregon, California, Montana and elsewhere.
