Ben and Dorothy
Dorothy (1896-1978) grew up in the prosperous gold rush town of Rutherglen in nothern Victoria. Her musical gifts were recognised by her parents, who had her taught by an Australian operatic celebrity, Madame Elise Wiedermann. Dorothy became a professional singer and pianist and music teacher. After her marriage and the birth of her three sons , she got involved with the Victorian Federation of Mothers' Clubs, and served as its president for seventeen years from 1947 to 1964. ... Ben (1899-1986) was the son of a successful mining manager whose last mine, in Yandoit in central Victoria, was a financial disaster. But at the age of thirteen Ben won a place among the first entry into the Royal Australian Naval College. After completing the four year training, he enlisted in the A.I.F. shortly before the war ended. University studies led to teaching and he served as English master at the Footscray Technical School from 1938 to 1964."--Back cover.
